I have Money SBE 2004. I have noticed that adjustment transactions entered
directly into a LOAN account are not reflected in the appropriate category
when a Category Summary Report is run. I have double-checked all of the
report options but cannot find any settings that seem to be pertinent to this
situation. Does anyone have any ideas for either getting these to show up on
the reports or for an alternate way of entering these transactions that will
produce an accurate report?

I have discovered that the reason for this is that Money is not including any
LOAN accounts in the list of accounts used to generate the Category Reports.
I have double-checked the ACCOUNTS list in the 'Customize Report' feature and
LOAN accounts are simply NOT there.

Does anyone know if a) this problem is fixed in subsequent versions of Money
(I am using 2004 Money SBE) or b) if there is another fix for this problem?

Thanks-

Jeff

I confirmed the absence of loan accounts in category reports in my copy of
M06Dlx. As Money allows adjusting entries directly in the loan register, I'm
not sure why.

A workaround is to create a "Journal Entry" account as a bank account. Enter
$0 net transactions and split the categories. In the split, enter equal but
opposite (offsetting) amounts affecting the loan account (use the special
"Principal Transfer" category) and the expense category of your choice.

You should be able to include Journal Entry in your reports, which will
include the expenses on your category report. (I assume you mean "Spending
by category"?)

Thanks Chris. Yes, I thought of this potential workaround shortly after I
figured out what the problem was. Certainly seems odd that Money does not
include the transactions entered into LOAN accounts when it does allow you to
categorize them...

I am not familiar with the Principal Transfer category. The situatioin I
have is one where I have a Loan setup and have been making monthly payments
for some time. However, due to certain issues in the property market, I am
not making payments now - but the interest continues to accrue - so what I
entered was an 'account adjustment' transaction to increase the debt while
categorizing that into Interest.

I just tried to do a 'bogus' transaction in the checking account and doing a
TRANSFER to the LOAN account (to increase the amount owed) is not possible
since the LOAN account is not one that I may choose from the Accounts
dropdown.

Sorry to be dense - could you explain a bit more?

I have to retract my advice. "Principal Transfer" WAS a hidden category. It
was simply an account transfer that applies only to loan accounts and was
the only way to get a transfer into or out of a loan account.

It seems that MS, in their infinite wisdom, have now disabled use of it. If
you try to type it in exactly as I did, you now get warning that states
"Principal Transfer can not be used here".

Yet another thing screwed up.
