Importing categories

Hi all,

Well, I've been simplistic in my usage of M2K. I want to start using
the paycheck feature to break out the details of my paycheck. Yes,
yes. I should've done that from the get-go rather than putting in my
net. The same goes to my 401K when I used to contribute (future
questions on that).

I've noticed that when I started a new file to see the default
categories, they're different from my own .mny file where I created
additional categories and sub-categories, plus I deleted the default
ones that I didn't think were useful (bad me).

Is there an easy way to get the old default categories w/o me having
to re-enter tons of data again? I tried exporting my data. There's
also a bug because I can't export just one account and play with that
instead. Rather it exports everything to a surprisingly small file
(17K only!). If I recreate the categories, is there anything I need to
watch out for

Or should I just start a new file and start fresh, and slowly re-enter
my old data as time allows so long as have the whole year by the end
of the year.

Looking to avoid all manual re-entry of my data. :(

There's no good answer. Here's what I'd do: use MoneyLink for Excel to
import all of the transactions from all accounts. Then Id take that
worksheet and sort it by category:subcategory. Then I'd do some spreadsheet
play to get that list down to the unique ones. Then I'd compare that list to
Money Accounts & Bills|Categories & Payees|Categories and add any ones I
wanted to add. You won't have to re-enter tons of data; just the
category/subcategory names and setup.

Thanks DW,

What version of Money are you using to use Moneylink for Excel? Is
this a plug-in that I have to purchase? I don't show Moneylink in my
Money 2000 or Excel.

In the meantime, I just started a new file and move my investments
over. I'll loose a little history for 2004, but maybe I'll just chip
away at reentering it slowly or just use both files until the old one
is fully reconciled.

Goldenset,

If understand your post, you do not need to export anything into a new file.
Go to Tools, Options, Categories.
Click restore standard categories-Make sure you have ask me before removing
categories box checked
