 - PASSPORT PROBLEM FROM A NON-USER I am sorry to read about all the problems users are having with interfacing to Money. I remember a few years ago when passport was first offered on Money. It took quite awhile to get them to stop bothering me to sign up. Since I use AOL I didn't want another email and I certainly didn't want everything interfaceing with my personal financial data on the internet. Since I had no need to have my Money data anywhere but on my home computer I stayed away, and I sure am glad I did. I get everything I want from Money by using the software without all the automatic uploads and downloads. I decide when I want a stock update and that's about the only thing I download on a regular basis. I manually input my data. No big deal and I know it is right, not conflicting with my bank's database. The product is great for me. I've used it for almost 9 years now. Lots and lots of great history there and fortunately I am able to control what I get. I back-up the (now) 3 disks every week. Sure I have a CD Rom, but I got a 3 1/2 disk drive on my new Dell computer just for Money. I wish all you passport users a quick fix to your problem. Sometimes simpler is better.  - The sign-in name you entered is not associated with this file I have been using money 2004 deluxe for some time and now I get a message that says "The sign-in name you entered is not associated with this file".  - Anyone going to switch to Quicken? Fortunately I do not have the Passport problem. Somehow I turned off the Passport option sometime ago. Dumb luck. But the situation for those of you who have the problem is terrible and inexcusable. Assuming the problem gets corrected in the next 24 hours will any of you switch to Quicken? Can Quicken convert Money files? I do not use Money bill pay---I use Schwabs. I do download daily my various account balances however. I have been using Money ever since it came out. Good luck.  - 401k contributions problem I am a recent college grad and just started tracking my money from my new job with MS money. I have a 401k account, which I set up to download from the internet its current worth. However, when I enter my paycheck, I enter the amount that is removed from it each paycheck period to go into my 401k as contributions. The problem is that money adds the contributions separately than the downloaded worth, so effectively it lists that I have twice as much in my 401k than I actually do. Any way to have the contributions deducted from the paycheck entry (for tracking purposes) go into my 401k as regular contributions and then be verified when the online statement gets downloaded instead of it getting added to it?  - Bi-weekly vs Monthly Budgets Recently, I started getting paid every 2nd week, instead of once per month. My budget was set up on a monthly basis, and worked well. Now, I want to change to a bi- weekly budget because of the income change. For example, groceries was $500 per month, but now I am setting it up as $500 every 4 weeks. This means that my budget period will not always start at the beginning of the month, which seems to mess up the 'Review you current budget status' page. For example, my new budget period was to start July 29th, so I should have $500 available for groceries. However, the budget status shows that the groceries I bought today put me over the budgeted limit for the month of July because it takes the $500 amount, multiplies by 13 periods, then divides by 12 to get a monthly average.  - possible cause of the sign on problem I am very concerned that the information we are being given from Microsoft may not be entirely true. After 3 days of this product not working, I am becoming very skeptical and believe there may be a bigger problem than what Microsoft is leading on. I have become nervous that the potential problem might lie in the Money and the Money Services not being Y2k compliant. Does anyone else suspect this? If it were just a simple data problem as we have been led to believe, would microsoft not have fixed it in 3 days. I think some major rewriting of the code is being completed to fix the flaw in the software. Let me know if I am on the wrong path, I am just really nervous and upset about not being able to get to my financial data.  - Corrupt backups? Due to the current login fiasco, I tried to resore my last backup from 7/18. By backups span 2 flopies each, and I have the last 3 backups (7/18, 7/8 and 6/25). However, when I try to resore from any of the backups, I get the message that the backup is corrupt! I tried copying the files from the floppies to the hard drive, and restoring from there.  - cancelled accounts not deleted Time ago, I have created a "cash" account to manage cash transaction related to a bond investment. This was done cicling throu renamiing the investment. After a while I deleted this account, as I prefer not to have cash transaction linked to the investment. But the account continue to appear, as a possible choice when I import data from my bank.  - shameful Software errors happen. But I think it's shameful that MS does not notify their customers anywhere on the Money support web pages that there is a problem. I've spent a lot of time trying to figure this out, only to discover that the problem is on their side, and they're well aware of it. I had to dig into the newgroups to figure this out. I'm a tech-savvy guy, and I feel bad for all the customers who wouldn't know to check the newsgroups. This has happened before (with a bad XP patch they issued back in November (caused double-scrolling in Outlook Express and IE)).  - Using client software I specifically and consciously chose to use client software (rather than a web site) to consolidate my financial data. My goal was to have the data (and manipulations thereof) accessible whether I was on-line or off-line; to have private consolidation of all the data rather than on a server in the sky somewhere; and, to have local control. All this has been thwarted. I have backups from every month going back a full calendar year on duplicate PCs and none of the data is accessible. If I had any idea that using Passport for on-line authentication could impact my ability to get to my own client software and associated data, I would never have used it.  - Password Issue - Read MVP's and the sort Don't get me wrong here, I have received plenty of great information from MVP's and other regarding MS software, but to make us all sound like idiots because we used the suggested password system for a product is unacceptable. MS specifically tells you it is highly recommended to use Passport. Now while we all wait for the fix, we get to listen to all of you tell us how stupid we are for even using it in the first place. Personally, I can get around using it for now, but it is rather annoying that it is taking this long. Funny thing, I had always used Quicken in the past but this time around I thought I would use Money to see the difference. Fortunately, I bought it about 10 days ago and I have decided if it takes longer than Friday, I will be returning the software for an exchange for Quicken. Final thought, why does MS need to use the Passport system anyways, why don't they secure your information locally like they do on Access or just about any other software package? PS I think it is wonderful that you (the MVP's) spend your time helping others on the newsgroup and you are all probably tired of hearing people moan and groan about this. Although, I think you need to remember that not all of us are as technically superior as you are on this software and we take the word of the manufacturer. So when we get screwed by the manufacturer (on something that should have been tested) we tend to get a little upset, especially when we spend all day trying to figure out what is wrong, including spending 35 minutes on hold and never actually talking to anyone (But trust me I know how to take care of the Sasser virus) So give us a break and stop telling us were not so smart in the first place. I've had to install the trial version of 2004 (which expires on August 15) because I was closing in on the date that downloads of info would no longer be allowed.  - Who's responsible? Hello. Not intending the fan the flames here, but to add a sense of reality and to give an opinion that's worth what you paid for it ... I'm a user of MS products, including Money, not an employee of MS, and I imagine I suffer from problems as much as the next person. I think that this user community, although looking to blame Microsoft, may benefit from looking at itself a little bit. Software F-ups happen. Most people knows this. So while you're busy blaming Microsoft for making a mistake, you may want to look at your backup plan. If your data is so [business] critical, why are you allowing your self to be dependant upon a single file? Where are your back-ups from before Monday? Where is your weekly backup that Money will create automatically for you if you ask it? This is your data, maybe your business, so in the end it is your responsibility. It is our expectation that, when fixed, this will not require any downloads (or uploads), but the solution may require a connection to our web site. This was not caused by any download of Money software, and we don't think that a download will be necessary to fix it. We are not sure whether every user will be fixed automatically, or if some manual steps will need to be done.  - Category I got a strange question, what's the best category to put something in as a refund? For example let's say I bought a product at a retail store, then I returned it later.  - Budget Is Losing an Account I have been using Money almost since it first came out, but I have run across an issue I haven't heard about. Maybe some of you have. When I lay out my budget, Money keeps putting one of my credit card accounts in a category of "Transfers out of budget accounts." What it puts into this category is the payments I project in the bills and deposits view for charges on that card. I can get rid of it by changing the projected entry I have for that card to $0. I don't guess that would be the end of the world, but I'm not getting that behavior in the other credit card accounts. Also, it seems like it is double counting the projected category expenses for purchases I make in that account. By way of an example, if I use $250.00 as the amount I estimate I will charge on that card, I get a line item at the end of my budget increasing my budget expenses by $3000 (12 X 250). If the budget wizard is adding the $3000 to the other expenses I have put into the wizard, isn't that double counting the expense items charged to that card? Clearly, the various amounts and categories for charges to that card are included in the calculated expenses. I can't see that I have done anything to note that account as being outside the budget as I have with a couple of accounts. I don't see anything in the "account details" suggesting that the account should not be included in the budget. Has anyone seen this behavior? Is there anything you can suggest to count this account correctly besides artificially using $0 as the projected expenses for this account. Thanks in advance for your help. Money does not support this function. Read the FAQ's posted elsewhere.
