This morning I had to format my HDD and re-install windows. I backed up my
Money files onto a memory stick and have now re-installed Money (2003
standard). I cannot, however, restore the back-up. I go into File/restore
back up. I select the back-up file and click on 'restore'. I then get a
window asking me where I want to file the restored back-up file and gives me
the default option in 'My Documents'. If I then click on restore - all that
happens is that the back-up file is duplicated into My Documents - nothing
goes into 'Money' itself.
I'm becoming desperate - I have several years of transactions stored in that
back-up file.
What am I doing wrong?

Copy the .mbf backup file to your 'My Documents' folder, or another
place, so that you have an extra copy. If the copy that is already
there is good, that is fine. However that action of having Money
just copy the .mbf file to the hard drive seems really odd, so I
don't know what to make of that copy that is already there.

In Windows Explorer, double-click the .mbf file. That should launch
Money. When Money asks where to restore to, do not take the default.
Instead Browse to a location such as you 'My Documents' folder.

The default *is* 'My Documents' - and all that seems to happen is that yet
another duplicate back-up file is created. I just cannot get the back-up
file to restore into 'Money' itself. I'm just terribly worried that somehow
the 'proper' back-up file has been overwritten by the 'virgin' Money program
and everything has been lost. If so I'm devastated - years of financial
files will have been lost.

In Windows Explorer, I suggest you choose Tools->FolderOptions->View
and uncheck HideExtensionsForKnownFileTypes.

1. Do you have a *.mbf file on that flash drive? A .mbf file is a
Money Backup File. How big is it? A .mny is a Money file. You do not
restore it. If that is what you have instead of a .mbf file, that is
fine. Let's assume it is a .mbf file for now.

2. Copy the *.mbf file on your hard drive to a different name such
as Hoo03.mbf. How big is that file?

3. Assuming you have a *.mbf file on that flash drive, copy it to
the My Documents folder. Right-click that file and choose Open. That
should launch Money and start a restore.

4. Restore the file by not choosing the default location, but
instead name the file "Uno03". After the restore, do you then have a
file named Uno03.mny?

Sorry for the delay in responding to your helpful response Cal - PC is still
playing up and I've ordered a new HDD. I don't know what I've done but I've
lost the back up file. The only MBF file I'm left with now is the back up of
the new account I've created. Still, what the hell. There's more in life to
worry about than some lost files. I'll survive !! I think I'll make several
back up files of my re-created account for when I swap the hard drives
though!

Cal

Don't know if you're still monitoring this thread - but I managed to find an
uncorrupted back up file and restore it - so I'm happy again! (Despite
having wasted the best half of a day setting up complete new account
details!!)

That is really good news.

I *know* you have more than one backup now!

I found it in the Recycle bin - I'd obviously deleted it by mistake. Thank
heavens for the old Recycle bin!!!
