Hi All - Microsoft Money 2000 - Windows ME

About 3 weeks ago I lost access to my Microsoft Money program, it just will
not open. When I click the desktop icon, I get nothing, no errors, just a
short flash of the hourglass as it seems to try to open, then just.. zippo..

The fact that it is giving me the silent treatment, won't even argue with
me, refuses to give me any clue as to why it just stopped working, is a real
puzzle. If it would at least throw me an error message and tell me why, I
might be able to find a way to make peace. But, the cold-shoulder treatment
leaves me helpless to know what to do to resolve the problem.

I have run a search for the CABS, and can find the ones that are supposed to
reinstall it, but, it seems to refuse to recognize them (it), so there is no
hope there either. I have to assume that for some reason, it has just
suddenly passed away, and I will have to replace it.

My question is, which more recent version of the Microsoft Money can I
replace it with that will still work with my 2000 files. I only used it for
storing my check register and those related records, thank goodness. I
always backed my files up to a floppy and CD for safety, and did so right
before the program bit the dust.

I would truly appreciate it someone could tell me which new version I can
get that will still work with the 2000 files.

Best regards,
Jan :)

You are sure your problem is with the application, not your data file? You
have tried to open the sample file? (Navigate to the Program files\Microsoft
Money directory and double-click on sample.mny.)

If yours was a US version, then any version from Money 2000 through Money
2004 should open your file--assuming that the problem isn't your data file
to begin with.

I have followed your instructions, and when I double click on the SAMPLE.MNY
file, it tries to open it in MS Word 2002, and all the text is garbled. Just
symbols. I tried several other things, like the DOS and 'other' to try and
find a way to open it so it was readable, but, nothing worked.

Not sure what this indicates. Program? Or, data file?

Thank you for your time to help, I appreciate it very much.

Jan :)

I would stay with Money 2000 and try 1. reinstalling the
program and/or 2. restoring the data file from a backup.

Personally I use Money 2000 and will never upgrade to later
versions because I have Money on my hp680 and Microsoft
in their infinite wisdom has stopped supporting the Handheld
platform.

So as a result when I got my Dell Axim I got Pocket Quicken
and resumed using Quicken.

Yes, in checking the File Type in the Folder Options I found MNY_AUTO_FILE,
now..here is the interesting part, at least it 'seems' rather strange to me,
the program it is set to open with is Word. When I clicked the Change button
next to this, it produced a long list of program thingies to select, but, I
don't know which one it should be opened with, but, there was not one in the
list that said Microsoft Money. So, I clicked on 'other'...and went to the
folder in Microsoft Money and selected the Money.exe. Then tried to open it
again, but, still no go. I decided to check the Add/Remove to see what it
was listed as..guess what..it's not there...no where in the list. It
*was*..I've seen it in the list many times before when adding or removing
various programs...but..not any more. *I* did not remove it. Either
something has somehow wiped it out, or it is so bad off it can't be
recognized any more.

Gotta tell ya..this is the weirdest one yet...and since my upgrade to Office
2002 XP, I've had
a gazillion of 'em.

Well...it looks like the only choice I have at this point is to get another
program. I don't think it would be wise to try and upgrade since the one I
have is garbage, I think I'd be best off with a new program install. I
bought my PC in Nov. 2000, and it should be sufficient for a new money
program. But, I don't know...geez..$17.00 after rebates...that's pretty
pricey.. ;-)

Think I'll try the trial run as you suggest first. See how it works, I may
want to stay more simple. I just use it for my check register, money in,
money out sort of stuff and such.

Thank you so much for all your time, assistance and information. I truly do
appreciate it. Fingers crossed!

Regards,
Jan :)
