I am having trouble finding a tread that covers synch
problems with Money 2003 Deluxe. Seen people with the
same problem here before, but I don't think the solution
was ever found. I'm running Windows XP. I don't have
any problem with turning on Passport. I click "Access my
money on the web", my accounts show up, when I click next
then Money freezes for a while and I get the error "An
unexpected error has occurred. Your data is not being
sychronized with MSN Money of the web." I updated from
Money 2002 deluxe about 5 months ago and I remember
having the exact problem then too. The fixes for 2002
deluxe never worked for me either. I've also tried
turning off ZoneAlarm and Norton Anti-Virus corporate
ver. Any other quesses. Thanks.

I think I got a good solution from the chat support
feature.

Open the sample money file found in the money folder.
Open it and set it as your primary file. The try
synching that. If it works your file is the problem, if
it doesn't it is your connection. Mine was my file. If
it is your file, make a copy of the file and open it.
Set it as primary and delete an account at a time, then
try to synch again and repeat as long as your synch
doesn't work. I found my problem was in my wife's Roth
IRA account. I had a fund with a symbol deleted. I am
trying to synch now, but it is further along in the
process. Good luck.

It worked. Here is my chat transcript.

Thank you for holding, after reviewing your problem
description, and as I understand the issue, you are
trying to synchronize with Msn Money and you get
an "unexpected error", is this correct?

{Dennis} this issue can be caused by several root causes.
These range from connection issues, to file corruption
and passport password failure. The first thing that I
need to ask is: Has this ever worked?

{Dennis} So there is no information on your Msn Money
portfolio?

{Dennis} ok - We need to find out if this is file
related.
At this time, we need to open the Sample file. This is a
file that is included with the Money program for
troubleshooting purposes. The Sample file is located in
the same directory in which Money is installed - usually
this will be C:\Program Files\Microsoft Money. Try the
following steps:
1. Go to File - Open
2. A box should have popped up that says "Look In"
towards the top. Click on the downward - pointing arrow
to the right and choose your C drive
3. In the large white box, locate "Program Files" and
double-click on it.
4. Locate and double-click on the "Microsoft Money" folder
5. Highlight the "Sample" file and click "Open"
6. Click on "Don't back up"
If you used the Custom option to install Money and
specified a different directory, browse to that
directory.
{Dennis} Once the sample file is open, go to File -
Password Manager, and associate your passport with the
file. Specify that it is your primary Money file and try
to set up synchronization.
{Dennis} If you are able to synchronize with the sample
file, it will indicate that your file has either
corruption, or information entered in such a way as Msn
Money cannot interpret it. If it is not able to
synchronize, it will indicate a problem with your
passport or connection
{Dennis} Great - let me know the results of that

It worked, I guess it must be my file! Anything I can do
about that?

{Dennis} There are a couple of ways to narrow down what
might be causing the issue. My preferred method is to
create a copy of the Money file, and start deleting
accounts one by one. Keep note of which account is being
deleted. When it successfully synchronizes, delete that
file and copy it again, this time deleting only that one
account. If it synchronizes, use another copy to delete
half of the transactions and try again - in this manner
you can sometimes discover the transaction(s) that are
causing the error. If the cause is widespread or file
corruption though, this will not always work.

{Dennis} If you mean closed accounts - yes. They will
sometimes import, especially if another account is
referenced in the closed account, such as a transfer
{Dennis} If your portfolio has successfully synchronized,
you can probably eliminate it as a possibility
{Dennis} Once you successfully synchronize with another
file that should be eliminated

{Dennis} Thank you for using Microsoft Money chat
support, have a great day.
