I tried to install Money 2000 Deluxe on my new XP
computer but I keep getting the error message: "Unable to
initialize a required Money component. Please
reinstall..."

An article on the Money support site notes the problem
but says the solution is to reinstall. I tried
uninstalling and reinstalling. No luck. The regular
support option requires the Product ID, which can only be
obtained if product is installed!

So, here I am. I would prefer not to buy a new copy.
Any suggestions?

Thank you.

You need to install and *run* Money 2004 as an administrator. You
might try installing into a different folder/directory.

Money 2000 is beyond its support period anyway.

Thanks for your help. I reinstalled Money 2000 in a
different directory. That did fix one problem. The
program works now, except that I get an error message
when I start the program asking me to insert a disk. I
close the error message window and the program seems to
run OK, so I guess I can get by if that's the only
glitch. Still, any other thoughts?

Ooops... yes. While Money 2000 needs to be both installed and
operated by an administrator, Money 2004 can be run by any user.

There are two solutions to that on Money 2000.

In the registry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Money\8.0,
"AVHelpPath"="W:\\MONEY\\avhelp", AVHelpPath probably refers to your
CD drive. If you are adept at editing the registry, you can change
the reference to refer to your hard drive rather than your CD drive.
If you are not adept at that, find a friend who is. The path need
not exist on the hard drive.

The other way to cure that is to copy the CD to a folder on your
hard drive. Then install by running setup from that folder.

Thanks so much for taking the time for this on-going
dialogue. I'm sorry, though, but I don't know what you
mean about an administrator. On my old Windows 98
computer, the program just ran.

Windows 98 knew nothing about user security (some users are permitted to do
more than other users, etc).

Windows NT/2000/XP do.

Windows XP users can be "Administrators" or not. "Administrators" are
allowed to do things (modify certain files, write files in certain
directories, delete or create certain files, etc) that mere "Users" are not.

Older versions of Money (like M2K) didn't take any of this into
account--they were designed exclusively for use in the M98 environment where
this stuff wasn't a factor.

I'm sure there is a lot more about this in the XP Help files.

In Windows 98 anybody could do anything to any file.

In XP, there is the capability to have some user(s) set up with
Administrator privileges, and have others more restricted. This
would have the potential to save the computer in the face of a
mistake or a worm.

I think you probably are running as an Administrator. I think that
is how things start out, but I welcome others to correct/add to
that.

In Start->Settings->ControlPanel->UserAccounts there would be a list
of Users. If you are an administrator, I think it would say
"Computer Administrator" in the box below your username.

Here are a couple links I thought that might be of interest:

http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art4776.asp
http://training.binghamton.edu/navdisplay.asp?navfilename=NAV-SECXPh&edufilename=EDU-WTKT

I am not saying that you should read these and act on them. I was
just thinking you might, or might not, want to get an overview.

Got Money working! Thanks for your help. Here's what I
did.

First, as recommended I installed it (again) in a
different folder than before. Then I did the following:

Start / Settings / Control Panel / Administrative Tools /
Computer Management

In Computer Management, click on "Disk Management" in the
tree: Computer Management (Local) / Storage / Disk
Management

Highlight the hard drive letter. Then, from the menu in
Computer Management, click: Action / Rescan disks

Now Money works and I no longer get the missing disk
error message.
