Installing Money 2000 Standard on an XP Home computer (with pretty much all
the latest updates, SP's, etc.)

Gets all the way to the end and indicates that ACMSETUP.EXE has encountered
an error. This occurs just at 100% on the installation progress bar. Trying
to install using full admin privileges. Tried copying the entire contents of
the CD to a temp directory on the HD and installing from there with same
results.

Any pearls of wisdom? My wife is tired of balancing the checkbook on our
ancient 400 MHz PII computer and would rather use the new computer.

As much as I like Money, I'd rather not simply upgrade unless that is the
final answer. Anyway, I won't know if I can afford it until I get it
installed and balance the checkbook. :-) (just kidding).

Malcom,

Make sure windowblinds isn't running on your machine. If it is, unload
it and then try and install Money.

Not being too sure what Windowblinds is, I would guess that it is not
installed. This is a pretty standard implementation of XP. Matter of fact, I
just more recently reloaded everything on the machine to clean things up.

Try installing into a different directory from the HD copy.

Will try that this evening. If that doesn't work, I'll probably go ahead and
upgrade, seeing as how I'm about four versions behind the curve.

Which reminds me of the story of why I'm using Money instead of Quicken.

Seems a few years ago, I was still using Quicken 2.0 when Quicken was up to
version 6.0, I think. I figure if a program still performs all the functions
you need, why upgrade? Anyway, I fired up the computer one day to check my
checking account balance before running to the store. The checkbook register
came up and indicated a positive figure of around $40. So, I went out and
picked up some groceries.

Within a couple of days, I received an overdraft notice from the bank for
three bounced checks. I logged onto Quicken again, and sure enough the
balance still said $40 (I hadn't entered the recent checks in, but they were
less than $40). I decided to sit down and do an ad-hoc reconciliation
between the program and my checkbook register to see if I left something
out.

As I was scrolling up through recent transactions, looking back and forth
between my paper register and the one on the computer, I happened to glance
down at the checking balance as reported by Quicken. It no longer read $40,
but rather $110 in the hole! I had not changed any entries or anything, just
scrolled up and down through the register.

I exited the program and started it up again. Sure enough, it said a
positive $40 balance. I scrolled the register up once and the figure
magically changed to the negative $110 amount. Well, that sucked. I ended up
paying about $90 in overdraft charges to the bank. Upon contacting Quicken
support about the issue, their official response was that they no longer
supported that version and that my only recourse was to suck it up like a
man and run out and purchase the newest version.

Since I was now more than broke for a while, I set up a spreadsheet in Excel
and used it for a while, then eventually went out and purchased MS Money
2000.

Tried it, no luck. I went through the registry and deleted everything
Money-related that I could find (not much as I assume the failure occurs
before components are registered).

I even tried a simple directory in 8.3 format ("C:\MSMONEY").

The only thing I suspect at this point is something to do with my particular
Windows installation. Remember I mentioned this is a fresh reinstall of XP
Home? In order to preserve some of my previous settings, etc., I did the
more recent install by telling Windows to install somewhere else
(C:\WINDOWS2) instead of formatting the drive, or installing (repairing) the
current Windows installation. Wonder if there is some built-in dependency
for Windows being located at C:\WINDOWS or C:\WINNT?

Anyway, while out at Best Buy this evening, I saw where Money 2004 Standard
is only $20. Guess I'll upgrade.
