    - accessing MS Money on the web I recently had to sign up with a hotmail account in order to automatically download from one of my charge cards (my other cards and checking accounts could download directly from the bank to MS Money). During the signup process, it told me I could access my accounts from any computer on the internet. How do I access my accounts from any computer on the internet?     - Repairing file in 2004 vs 2007 - one works the other doesn't. I've run into a problem, which may force me to upgrade to 2007, something I was hoping to avoid. I'm running Money 2004. Recently, Money froze while closing down, and I had to force a shutdown to get my system to reboot. When I attempted to open money again, it told me that the file hadn't been properly closed (which makes sense, as Money froze), and attempted to repair it. Money then told me that it couldn't repair the file. I attempted to run the Salvage Tool that comes with Money 2004. After digesting the file for about 4 minutes it gives up, and tells me the file cannot be repaired. Following a notice on a website, I downloaded a newer version of the Salvage Tool. Presumably the one that comes with M2007. It ran successfully. However, the salvaged file could not be opened in Money 2004. In fact, if one double clicks on the file, Money starts and then crashes. So, on a whim, I downloaded the trial of M2007, which I'd tried a while back and attempted to open both files, both the corrupted file and the "fixed" file. The corrupted file still refused to open, however the "fixed" file opened and converted itself to the 2007 format. The thing is I don't want to have to upgrade to 2007. I had tried it before and it had some features I didn't like compared to 2004. Is there any way to "downconvert" the file to 2004?     - Can't assign family member for invest. tx in Money 06 Canadian The UI doesn't appear to allow me to assign a family member to investment transactions. On the Cash transactions view of an investment account, if I select a transaction where the activity is Dividend, I can see the family members field is blank, but when I try to edit the transaction, a message box asks me if I want to edit the transaction from the originating account (the investment account) and from that view I'm unable to set a family member.     - Run Quicken and Money side by side? Is anyone running both Quicken and Money at the same time for the same information? I switched from Quicken a few years back because it became too unreliable. Now I am getting nervous about some of the problems I am experiencing with Money 06. It does not seem like it would be too difficult to have two computers side by side and run Quicken in one and Money in the other. When the numbers differed I could track down the reason.     - Capital Gains Estimator very buggy. One of my accounts (Schwab) crashes the program when I run Capital Gains Estimator. (I repaired my file and I tried it on another computer...still crashed)Another account (Wachovia) has five lots in three different securities that have an incorrect $0.00 cost basis.     - Stock option sale doesn't show up as a capital gain I sold employee stock and employee stock options this year. When estimating the amount of taxes due, the sale of employee stock will show up, however the sale of stock options will not. The options and stock both sit in the same account.     - M07 doesn't mangle Food:* I discovered something interesting in Money 07. M07 didn't mangle the Food:* categories in my M04 file. And I don't know why. At first, I thought it might have been because I had Food:Snacks defined. But I tried converting the M04 file both with and without that category and M07 mangled both Food:Groceries and Food:Dining Out, while leaving Food:Snacks alone. So I went back to my M04 file and tried re-converting it to M07. It did not mangle those categories. Food:Groceries and Food:Dining Out both still exist, and the non-subcategories Dining Out and Groceries do not exist. I also thought it might have been that there were transactions in my M04 file and no transactions in the M04 sample file. But that wasn't the case - the sample file was loaded with transactions in those categories. I looked at the category setings in my M04 file and the M04 sample file. Both appear to be identical. I'm out of ideas as to what to do to determine when the M07 conversion will mangle these categories and it won't. Anyone have any ideas I should try?     - categories absent I recently installed Money 2005, upgrading from a much earlier version 3.0, and have trouble with categories. When I try to assign a category the only category shown under expenses in the drop-down box is taxes! The help file says "To categorise your transactions, you can use the standard categories that come with Money or create your own custom categories." When I click on Show Full Category List in Money Settings I get the message "Money could not write to your Money file. The operation cannot be performed or another application finished this task before you." Then when I click OK I get the message "The standard categories have been added to your list of categories".     - How might I "blanket-assign" a custom category classification? Hi again, I would like to be able to take advantage of Money 2006's feature of adding a classification, such as "Family", to slice my data yet another way. However, for me to use it effectively in reports, I need to be able to deselect xactions that don't have a user-defined classification; don't see how I can do this in Money 2006, which leaves me with assigning a default classification for all transactions, including, ideally, new ones, which I can then filter in/out as needed.     - An Online Update Problem 2005/2007 This problem has started in Money 2005 and has now moved to 2007. I have two seperate credit card accounts with Citi. One account works fine. The other "bad" account does not. All observations are from the "View Downloaded Statements" page. In 2005 when I attempt to update credit card balances from Citi the "Bank Balance" would update but none of the transactions would download. The "Local Balance" would also remain unchanged. Now ( in 2005 and 2007) the bank balance will not update on the one "bad" account. The "Last Downloaded" date displays as 2/1/2079 and always has since 2005 when the problem originally started. I have attempted to repair (quick & standard) the file to no avail. Archiving off transactions does not work either. I believe this is a problem with my file not Money but I do not want to loose the info in this file and have WAY to much info to just start anew.     - Reconciling/balancing Does anyone know a way to have Money automatically reconcile to an electronic bank statement? i.e. when I am done downloading my latest bank transactions electronically, there are still some pending transactions in my own register that haven't cleared yet (e.g. ATM withdrawals, checks I've written, etc). So my own register doesn't match the bank's balance. The only way to reconcile the two balances is to wait until I get a paper statement and then do "Balance". Or I can manually add up the pending transactions and see if adding that to my own balance equals the bank's balance. I don't want to wait until I get my bank's monthly statement to reconcile.     - M04 Transaction & Quote Downloads stopped? I've been using M04 for a while now. I skipped M05 and M06 and I'm on my way to skipping M07 (maybe). Anyway, I'm at about 3 years of using M04. According to the licence agreement, M04 deluxe online access will cease to work after * 3 years after activiation of software, or * Sept 1, 2007 Whichever comes earlier. I did a quick google groups search and couldn't find anyone who had reported having experienced this 3 year expiration. I have vague recollection of having read of this kind of thing before (in this group), but that it was always just something user error and not actually the online service expiration. So my question is this: Has anyone experienced this expiration? The license for M04 Standard was the earlier of 2 years or Sept 1, 2006. Surely there are some M04 Std users out there who can weigh in as to whether or not downloads have ceased. My reason for considering M07 is that I may eventually be forced to deal with not being able to d/l transactions and quotes. And frankly that sucks. So I'm considering whether or not M07 will suffice. So I'm curious as to whether or not the online expiration in the license is just some text in a file or whether or not it's real. FWIW, the text in the M07 license is far more unsettling: "Microsoft provides Online services with the software. It may change or cancel them at any time." Part of my motivation for looking at M07 is to extend my online services. But the M07 license agreement sounds worse to me than the M04 agreement.     - Customizing Portfolio Manager question Hello! In MS Money 2006 Portfolio Manager (PM), one of my column headers is "Last tran.". The tooltip for this says "Date of the last transaction". When I right click on the header and select "Edit current view", and click on the "Portfolio columns" tab, it says that "Last transaction date" is "the last date the investment was TRADED". I have a stock which I bought in 1999 and have just been getting the dividends reinvested. So in Portfolio Manager, it only shows in the "Last tran." column the date of the buy (1999) rather than the date of the most recent dividend (9/2006). Is there way a way to customize PM so that the date shown is the most recent date of ANY transaction (buy, sell, reinvest) rather than a buy date which is 7 years old?? Appreciate the help!     - Electronic Payments I recently switched from making electronic payments from within MM2004 to making the payments at the banks websight. When I make a payment on the banks websight, the next time I update MM2004, the electronic payment is downloaded from the bank and entered into my check register. The downloaded payment does not contain any of the category information created in the Bill Pay section of MM2004. Money does not prompt "Is this your scheduled payment to XXX?". This creates a situation where I have to enter all the category information into the downloaded electronic payment. Is there a way to modify this, so Money recognizes the downloaded payment as a payment scheduled in the bill pay section?     - How to customize account list? In Money 2004, is there a way to choose the account I'd like to appear in the account list? The is the only view I use but some accounts are rarely used and I don't want them taking up space on the account list? For example, if I could have only favorite accounts display that would be great. I can sort by favorites but I like sorting by account type since it categorizes everything.     - Upgrading from Money 2002 to Money 2007 Do I need to uninstall Money '02 before installing Money '07? Also, my hard drive is formatted into 2 drives, ("C" & "D"). I had '02 installed on my "D" drive and I still have my backup files on my "C" drive. When I deleted '02 from my "D" drive I found that I still have a Microsoft Money folder containing "InvReg.exe" and "PssSumm.txt" files. I have no idea why either of these files are still there and I don't know if I need to keep the "InvReg.exe" file. The txt file merely notes "File Import: Your call completed successfully." I don't think I need to keep this file either. But, I am not sure. I would also like to know if I install '07 on my "D" drive will I still be able to import my backup files from '02 on my "C" drive?     - Make money Parents of 15 year old find $71,000 (US $ CASH) hidden in his closet. Does this headline look familiar? Of course it does. You most likely must have just seen this story recently featured on a major nightly news program. (U.S.A). His mother was cleaning, and putting away laundry, when she came across a large brown paper bag. It was suspiciously buried beneath some clothes and a skateboard in the back of her 15 year old sons closet. Nothing could have prepared her for the shock she got when she opened the bag, and found it was full of cash. Five dollar bills, twenties, fifties and hundreds all neatly rubber-banded in labeled piles. My first thought was that he had robbed a bank. said the 41-year-old women. There was over $71,000 in that bag, thats more than my husband earns in a year. The women immediately called her husband at the car dealership where he worked to tell him what she had discovered. He came home right away and they drove to the boys school and picked him up. Little did they suspect that, where the money came from was more shocking than actually finding it in the boys closet. As it turns out, the boy had been sending out, via e-mail, a type of Report to e-mail addresses that he obtained off the Internet every day. After school, for the past 2 months, he had been doing this right on his computer in his bedroom. I just got the e-mail one day and I figured what the heck. I put my name on it like the instructions said and I started sending it out, said the clever 15 year old. The e-mail letter listed 5 addresses, and contained instructions to send one $5 dollar bill to each person on the list. Then delete the address at the bottom and move the others down, and finally, adding your name to the top of the list. The letter goes on to state that you would receive several thousand dollars in $5 bills within two weeks, if you sent out the letter with your name at the top of the 5 address list. I get junk e-mail all the time, and really did not think it was going to work, the boy continued. Within the first few days of sending out the e-mail, the post office box that his parents had gotten him for his video game magazine subscriptions began to fill up, not with magazines, but envelopes containing $5 dollar bills. About a week later I rode my bike down to the post office and my box had 1 magazine, and about 300 envelopes stuffed in it. There was also a yellow slip that said I had to go to the (post office) counter. I thought I was in trouble or something. He goes on, I went up to the counter and they had a whole box of mail for me. I had to ride home and empty out my backpack, because I could not carry it all. Over the next few weeks, the boy continued sending out e-mail. The money just kept coming in, and I just kept sorting it out and stashing it in the closet, I barely had time for my homework. He had also been riding his bike to several of the banks in his area and exchanging the $5 dollar bills for twenties, fifties and hundreds. I didn't want the banks to get suspicious so I kept riding to different banks with like five thousand at a time in my backpack. I would usually tell the lady at the bank counter that my dad had sent me in to exchange the money, and he was outside waiting for me. One time the lady gave me a really strange look, and told me that she would not be able to do it for me. She told me my dad would have to come in and do it, so I just rode to the next bank down the street. (He laughs.) Surprisingly, the boy did not have any reason to be afraid. The reporting news team examined and investigated the so called "chain letter" the boy was sending out, and found out that it was not a chain letter at all. In fact, it was completely legal according to US Postal and lottery laws, Title 18, section 1302 and 1341, or Title 18, section 3005 in the US code, also in the code of Federal regulations, Volume 16, Sections 255 and 436, which state, A product or service must be exchanged for money received. Every $5 note that he received contained a little note that read, Please send me report number XYZ. This simple note made the letter legal because he was exchanging a service, (the report on how to) for a $5 fee.     - How to create retainer account? I have certain amounts of money that are spent at one location for a month. I'd like to setup something in Money 2004 that allows me to track how money in these accounts are distributed. For example, say I will spend money on these two services each month: Oct 2006 ServiceA $300 ServiceB $100 In September 2006, I'd like to apply the above money as spent and my checking account appear $400 less. Through out Oct, I will gradually spend the $400 but want to track how it is spent. For example: Oct 10 - ServiceA $50 Oct 12 - ServiceB $75 Oct 19 - ServiceA $100 and so on. As I spend the money from my primary checking account, the amount applied to the above two retainer accounts decreases until it reaches $0.     - MS Money 2005 Premium-No Color Charts or Graphs I've upgraded from MS Money 2002 Standard to 2005 Premium . The charts and graphs are in black and white and I want them in color. I've optimized all variables I'm aware of. All my other programs work well in color and I've had no other display issues with the computer.     - M07 advanced investment charting One of the things I can't get to work in M07 Premium is the advanced investment charting. This the screen you get when you click on the chart for a particular investment in the Portfolio view. It bascially takes you to Investment Home and shows a large chart for the investment you licked on. In M06 you could download an Advanced Chart function from MSN that gave you larger/better charts with more information such as volume and dividends. In M07 the advanced charts just don't work.     - Spinoff/Demerger Corporate Events Folks, Having given this matter some thought, I have come to the conclusion that demerger corporate events cannot be handled correctly in Microsoft Money. My understanding is that the demerger option in money merely operates by adding shares at a certain basis cost. The problem with this is which cost does one use? For the newly created share, there seem to be two costs that are relevant. One cost is the actual basis cost of the position from a tax point of view. The second relevant cost is the cost of the position using the market price on the first day of trading. If you take the first view, the gains from a tax perspective are correct, as I admit is also the lifetime to date profitability of the position. But it has the effect of accelerating the profit of the position into a small timescale making a nonsense of performance reports (when broken down by individual periods). If you take the second point of view, the performance reports are correct, but the gain from a tax perspective is incorrect. Let me give an example: I hold a share for a couple of years which appreciates by 50% over that course of time. In the previous month, a demerger event occurs and I receive a number of shares in a new company. If the basis cost of these shares is taken to be from a tax position, then that 50% gain is accelerated into a single month giving an absurdly high monthly return on capital. If one ensures that the cost of the position is the price from the first day of trading, the monthly return on capital report makes sense, but of course the cost of the position no longer corresponds to the cost from a taxation point of view. I wondered if anyone else had a point of view on this; if my line of reasoning is correct, it implies every position really needs two costs, one is the value of the position from the time that the new position was created, and a second cost representing the basis cost of the position from a tax point of view. It seems to me that if you use Microsoft Money you have to make a choice as to which you want to track: profitability per unit time (month or whatever), or gains which are correct from a tax perspective. I am writing from the United Kingdom, where demergers are not treated as sales, but the basis cost of the old position is apportioned to the two new positions in a manner agreed with our tax authority; although I understand the tax treatment is similar in the United States. I am a bit of a geek, and I like to track my portfolio profitability by each month and quarter, and look at how profit is distributed over different time periods; I use it to track and try and estimate share and portfolio volatility. So maybe this doesn't affect too many people! There have been many posts on the topic of demergers in this board, but they all seem to focus on getting the correct basis cost for the new position, which has the unfortunate side effect of accelerating previous gains (in the old position) into the time period immediately following the new position, giving absurdly high returns on capital.
