Dear NG:
Windows XP SP2
Computer Administrator account
Uninstalled Money 2007 Deluxe 03/29/2008
Installed & activated Money Plus Deluxe 03/29/2008

1. Every time I sign into Money Plus Deluxe I'm prompted "To continue
operating successfully, Money requires a software update. Click OK to close
Money and begin the update now."

2. Clicking OK closes Money and results in a prompt "Money is now ready to
download the new files. To begin the installation, click OK." Clicking OK
results in another window showing many file names being downloaded, then it
closes.

3. Reboot > Open Money > Same prompt as in Step 1. At this point I can
either click Cancel or OK. "Cancel" results in the prompt going away but
the Money Version number remains 17.0.120.727. "OK" results in Step 2.

4. Update without reboot, I'm prompted as in Step 1 but "OK" results in
Money
closing and I'm prompted with "The Money software update is already being
installed or updated on this computer. Please try again once that
installation or update is complete." clicking OK for this prompt closes the
prompt but daupdate.exe remains running in Task Manager.

5. Terminating daupdate.exe and running Money just starts the loop all over
again.

6. I've tried installing the update in Safe Mode, opening the sample.mny
file,
reinstalling Money Plus, moved My Money.mny to a folder in My Documents.

7. Any other suggestions would be much appreciated. Glad I still have the
disc for Money 2007.

Create a new Administrative user. Open Money as that user, and
create a new Money file. Save that and reboot again.

Thanks Cal,

Created the new admin account, opened Money and was immediately prompted to
update. Unfortunately the same update loop occurred.

Fortunately I CAN use the program in either account...it just won't update.

6. I've tried installing the update in Safe Mode, opening the sample.mny
file, reinstalling Money Plus, moved My Money.mny to a folder in My
Documents.
also:
DEP is turned on for essential Windows program and services only and
compatibility mode
for C:\Program Files\Microsoft Money Plus\MNYCoreFiles\msmoney.exe is
unchecked.

BTW There is another MNYCoreFiles folder in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Money
Plus, it is named:
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Money
Plus\MNYCoreFiles.NEW.{9D6EAA4F-27B2-4407-AC72-4BBD2FCB6ED1}"
I think it was created by the update.

Again any further suggestions are appreciated.

I would contact Microsoft support. Help->About gives the serial
number, which is the product ID you will need for free support.

I experienced some problems of this type as well, but I determined, in my
case anyway, that it was because my particular version was a downloaded
version and I hadn't logged into the msn account that I had purchased it
through. Every time I have to reinstall I have to go through the same
procedure in order for the software to update/run correctly. It WILL NOT
update either until I successfully log onto that msn account. Maybe this
is what you are experiencing?

I just bought and installed Money plus deluxe and am going through exactly
this problem -- if you look at the baords a number of people are having
exactly this -- it is something that is most likely broken given the recent
windows updates

I am using XP SP2

The subject line of this thread is SOOOOOO appropriate. This is
insane. Count me in with the others who with a loud "me too!" I've
also taken every step indicated online!!! I'm running Vista SP1, and
Microsoft Money Plus Deluxe. Every single time that I start up Money,
I get that damned message that a required update is needed. Every
single time, I click OK, allow the download to complete, and then
restart Money (even after rebooting first). The version number still
hasn't changed from 17.0.120.727, and the date stamp on msmoney.exe
remains at xx/xx/xx.

A complete search of my hard drive reveals these instances of
msmoney.exe*.*

msmoney.exe.727.pat
msmoney.exe 07/25/2007 MNYCoreFiles (C:\Program Files\Microsoft
Money Plus)
msmoney.exe 07/27/2007 (no path or folder info)
MSMONEY.EXE-64874269.pf Prefetch (C:\Windows)
msmoney.exe.cab 3/18/2008 MNYCoreFiles.NEW.{9D6EAA4F-27B2-4407-
AC72-4BBD2FCB6ED1} (C:\Program Files\Microsoft Money Plus)
msmoney.exe.727.pat 3/30/2008 MNYCoreFiles.NEW.{9D6EAA4F-27B2-4407-
AC72-4BBD2FCB6ED1} (C:\Program Files\Microsoft Money Plus)

I keep seeing "try this," then "try this." Well we've all "tried
THAT" over and over. So far, these options do NOT work. I have used
Quicken for years but decided that it was time to make the leap to
"Microsoft Money Plus Deluxe." And I think I've pretty much concluded
what the "PLUS" stands for: "PLUS MORE PROBLEMS THAN I"VE EVER
EXPERIENCED WITH QUICKEN."

Is anyone at Microsoft listening?

Thanks,
//Gary

Yes, only once (unless I have to reinstall again for whatever reason). And
yes once the update completes that I have to download from the internet, I
can go ahead and restore my backup and everything is fine from there. But
it will not function properly at all until I have successfully logged into
the msn account, downloaded the other files needed from the internet,
restarted Money. Then and only then will it allow me to restore the
backup. After that, it doesn't give me any trouble at all.

The version that I have that trouble with is the web/downloaded one/2006.
I'm assuming that if you purchased/downloaded yours, then you could probably
solve your troubles by going through the same process as I have had to do
(over and over and over again).

Like other I have tried all of the suggestions without success. I restored my
Vista O/S back to 3/20 (prior to the problem) and all that acheived was to
get the "Microsoft Money has stopped working" message. Had to restore the
system back to the current status to continue using Money Plus. Surely
someone at Microsoft has a professional response to this obvious program bug
in the update.

Hi Kevin and others:

I've been having the same problem as the rest of y'all. I finally
decided to try some drastic measures, since the worst that might happen
is that I'd have to reinstall Money 2006, and it was looking like I'd
have to do that anyway. Here's what I did:

(1) Open an Explorer window on the Microsoft Money Plus installation
directory.

(2) From the Explorer menu, go to Tools/Folder Options/View and select
"Show hidden files and folders." In my case, this reveals two hidden
folders: "MNYCoreFiles" and
"MNYCoreFiles.NEW.{9D6EAA4F-27B2-4407-AC72-4BBD2FCB6ED1}"

(3) BACKUP EVERYTHING IN THE INSTALLATION DIRECTORY!

(4) Delete the hidden folder "MNYCoreFiles."

(5) Rename "MNYCoreFiles.NEW.{9D6EAA4F-27B2-4407-AC72-4BBD2FCB6ED1}" to
"MNYCoreFiles."

(6) Start Money Plus.

At this point, Money Plus started without prompting me to update. When I
check the version from the "About" dialog, I see that it has been
updated to 17.0.120.1415.

I can't guarantee that this will work for anyone else, but it did work
for me. GOOD LUCK!

By the way, I'm running XP SP2 with the latest updates, and my copy of
Money Plus was purchased on CD from a retail store.

Best Regards,
Brett Pantalone

After hours of playing with this, I think I have improved Brett's procedure
so that it should work for most people.

1. Get hidden files turned on.
3. Next, you don't need to run Money each time for this. Instead we will
just run the update program: daupdate.exe that is inside MNYCoreFiles.

So here is how I got things working:
First goto:
Program Files/Microsoft Money Plus with hidden files displayed

You should see:
MNYCoreFiles
MNYCoreFiles.NEW.{9D6EAA4F-27B2-4407-AC72-4BBD2FCB6ED1}

Now get your task manager up and running, and kill off daupdate.exe
(processes) if it is running. Then run it again (its located in
MNYCoreFiles). Make sure you have run it at least TWICE, maybe THREE times.

Now go back up one level of directories and rename that funky file:
MNYCoreFiles.NEW.{9D6EAA4F-27B2-4407-AC72-4BBD2FCB6ED1}
to be
MNYCoreFiles.NEW
instead....

Now you can browse into the file. Go in and make sure that you do NOT see a
bunch of files File.xxx.PAT or any .CAB files if you do, then stop. Delete
the folder, and start over... You can try running the daupdate again... run
it three times this time... maybe it will work right... basically it needs to
apply all those pat files before and get the .CAB files to unpack before the
next step.

If you do not see any .PAT files or any .CAB files, then everything is good.

Next make sure you kill off daupdate.exe again... Then inside the .NEW
folder, do "Select All", "Copy". Go to the MNYCoreFiles, and paste. Answer
"Yes to All" for replacing the exsting files.

Okay... Now start up Money. It's gonna want to update again.. This time it
worked for me... Hope that helps you all out. Laters,

-d.

ps. I just got an email back from MS that they are aware of the problem and
working on it. If my fix doesn't work, they sent me another fix to install
the trial version, then install the CD version somewhere else and "merge" the
two ... That would probalby work as well.

Dgalbraith:

Thank you -- your process worked exactly as you described, and ended
nearly an hour of frustration with this product. I kind of "fell
into" your process before searching this group but what kept killing
my effort was not ending the 'daupdate.exe' task...

Now that the application is updated, I just can't activate it --
presumably an issue with our proxy server but I hope to have that
resolved soon also.

Thanks again.

Here is the message I got from microsoft support:
Uninstall your current version of Microsoft Money on your computer by going
to Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel. If you have the Trial Version of
Microsoft Money installed at this time, proceed to #5.

Open up Internet Explorer and go to
http://www.microsoft.com/money/freetrial_deluxe.mspx and click "Download the
Free Trial".

Once the program is installed, open the Microsoft Money program and once you
are prompted to install the update, do so.

Once the update is complete, open Microsoft Money and go to Help>About
Microsoft Money, check the version number. The last four numbers should now
be 1415.

Close Microsoft Money and go to "C:/Program Files/Microsoft Money Plus".
Right-click on the Microsoft Money Plus folder and select 'copy', then go to
your desktop and right-click on there and select 'paste'.

Go to Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall the trial
version of Microsoft Money. Reboot your system. Then install your CD version
of the product.

Once the program is installed, go to "C:/Program Files" and delete the
"Microsoft Money Plus" folder. Click and drag the Microsoft Money Plus folder
from your desktop into the Program Files folder or copy and paste. Once the
folder is copied to the Program Files folder, open Microsoft Money and check
the version number again.

After you open Microsoft Money and are not being prompted for the update,
delete the 'Microsoft Money Plus' folder from your desktop

For those who are struggling with this problem, the procedure above
worked for me. I followed it exactly.

I have been fighting this for almost two weeks.

Hey, I've been having the same described problem and followed Brett's
suggestions found in this thread. I have the Dell 530 with Vista all updates
current (missing my XP bad) and am just learning that there are definitely
conflicts. I have a newly purchased version of the Money Plus retail CD.

I followed his directions but did have to add a step. I was missing some
needed files to start money. So, I used the copy of the original
"MNYCoreFiles" folder to augment the missing files... choosing not to
overwrite any existing files.

You know. You would think that microsoft would make their stuff to be more
compatible. Thanks guys for troubleshooting this!! I can now focus on what I
need to...bills. LOL.
