If your computer is new, defective disk sounds quite plausible. I do
suggest running a system restore. I also suggest making sure your OS has
ALL critical updates from MS installed.

You might be in for some major troubleshooting. It sounds like you
purchased Money 2004 Deluxe retail. I would get on the phone to Microsoft
for tech support pronto, since you are entitled to it.

Once you fix the problem, it should open. You might have to exchange for
another installation disk.

You didn't say what the exact problem was, but I found this when I was
having the problem you generically describe. It fixed my problem even
though it says it applies to 2003. I used it on 2004 Deluxe.

I get the same message, but mine goes back to the home
page. I can work for a while and then something I do
triggers the error message. I downloaded the 90 free
trial. Wish I could go back to Money 1999, but my XP
version just doesn't want to run the program. Good luck
with your problem.

Is this with a pre-existing Money data file? Can you open Money by
double-clicking on the sample file in the Money directory in Program Files?

You need to try the sample file. Assuming i opens fine, you can pretty much
rule out the installation and the CD. Then you'll be back to an issue with
upgrading your data file. Too many people wind up at this same place.

Maybe this FAQ, soon to be up on the web, will help:
---
Q): I thought Money files were supposed to be upward compatible. How come
Money[new] crashes when upgrading my Money[old] data file?
[Relevant to Money2003 (v.11) and up]

A): Most users find the file upgrade process painless. Beginning with M03, a
significant number of users don't. For these users, a range of outcomes from
Money just crashing to misleading error messages about the file being
read-only to missing data in the upgrade file result instead. The exact
reasons for this are unclear, but it would appear that the upgrade code has
become much less tolerant to "damaged" files. (Here a "damaged" file means a
file that has somehow become inconsistent with itself or not conforming to
the "normal" structure. Here "somehow" generally seems to be by Money
itself, though things like End Task when the CPU shows 100% use by Money and
the application is reported as not responding "just because" Money is slow
and non-responsive may also be factors.)

The workarounds identified include:

- Many users have found success by running the msmoney -s repair technique
on the original data file from the original version then upgrading the
repaired file. For people who have nothing left of the original version
besides a set of backup floppies, this is not an option.

- Using the salv.exe repair tool from the newer version or from Microsoft
Support on the data file before upgrading then upgrading the repaired file.
As above, this method does not work with .MBF files or with .MBF files
spread across multiple floppy disks.

(For more information of the repair tools and file corruption in general,
see "I think my file has been corrupted. How do I tell? What do I do then?")

- Some users have found/and or been advised by Microsoft Support that an
intermediate upgrade through, say, M02, first solved the problem. Of course,
finding a CD of M02 can be difficult.

- Some users have ended up resorting to QIF Export/Import to get the data
out of the old version and into the new version as a better choice than
losing all of their data completely. This is a last resort.

- Some files that could not upgrade in M03 can upgrade in M04.

Note that several of these methods do not apply if all you have is backup
floppies or files. This is one reason that we always recommend upgrading by
moving the entire original .MNY data file rather than going through the
backup/restore process.

Finally, note that it is probably a good idea to confirm your installation
of the new version of Money is good before going down any of these paths. To
do this, open the Sample data file located in the Program Files\Microsoft
Money directory or try to create a new file.

Very good advice. Of course, Money 2004 should have a utility to upgrade
the .mny file from a previous version--IF the sample file opens.

Also, Money has repair utilities for both the program itself and ALSO for
.mny files. If the upgrade utility doesn't work, then it would be a good
idea to run (assuming it's there) the repair utility for the .mny file in
the old computer using the old program, then trying to upgrade to the new
.mny file version using the repaired file.

Money tech support knows how to access these abilities.

I'm not sure I understand your posting. I think you are trying to add some
value to my post and I can't really figure out what that is. If you've got
something of value to add, I'd like to add it to the FAQ.

Money does have the ability (all by itself, without a utility) to upgrade
.MNY files from previous versions for most all users.

The FAQ entry cites the data file repair utilities and the process you
describe. Money does have an installation repair tool: isn't it called
setup?

Last night I spent one hour and a half with Microsoft
Support on the phone and they couldn't fix the problem.
According to them there is a conflict between Microsoft
Money 2004 and Netzero, but I uninstalled netzero and
tried again and the problem was still there, then we
uninstalled McAfee antivirus and went thru the same
process and no solution. They said they know they are
having problems, but having found the solution for it and
now I am expecting a call from the senior programmer to
try to fix the error problem. This is becoming a very
problematic situation since I need to use Money and can't,
and on top of that the store won't take back any open
software, so unless Microsoft is able to fix the problem
or refund my money I won't have any other choice that to
go back to 2003 which was working perfect.
Another thing that I though of doing is uninstalling
everything and re-installing the factory default software,
but that will take a lot of work on my end to have to back
up all the files I have.
At the same time it occured to me that maybe the problem
is that I am upgrading from standard 2003 to Deluxe 2004.
Thanks for your help and if you have any other idea please
let me know.

I am having the trouble as you. It only started about 4
days ago, but I have loaded and updated so much in the
previous 3 days its hard to tell what might have done
it. I attempted to load the 2004 trial version, and I
get the same error reply. I can open the sample, but
then nothing else can recovered. I've tried the restore,
but that doesn't work either. I can't remove and re-
install because my computer came with this loaded, and as
such, I don't have the disc to re-install, only a
complete recovery. I'm about to try restoring my
computer to about 2 weeks ago, just as a long shot.

Keep me posted here! I'm with you in spirit.

Regarding store not taking it back -- Microsoft offers a 30-day return,
opened/unopened. The retailer should honor this warrantee, which is printed
on the box somewhere,

Yes, I am trying to add value to your post!!! The repair utilities I'm
talking about require knowing the EXACT run command (to repair the Money
program) OR knowing how to use "Salv" (you'll find this in the Money folder
in Program Files) to repair a damaged .mny file. No doubt this may vary
from one Money program to the next.

You give great advice. We're on the same page.

Sorry you're having such a hard time. I figured you had a software
conflict on your hands. That's why used computers can be such a hassle.

Uninstalling everything, FORMATTING your HDDS from the MS Windows XP
Installation Disk, then reinstalling your apps, then personalizing will fix
this (absent hardware issues) and YES, it's a pain in the rear.

Since you bought a used computer, was the SYSTEM RECOVERY SET provided by
the original manufacturer included?

Trial versions add a level of complication to something that's complicated
enough. It's actually better to BUY what you need, eliminate the additional
complication, and OBLIGATE Microsoft to provide Tech support to a paying
customer. Just my opinion.

I agree with you there. I actually just did it to see if
it was a problem with my old version (2001), but if the
2004 was compatible with my clearly confused computer, I
would have just kept that. At this point I am looking at
saving all my files and doing a nice clean formatting
session. I'm worried that I have now lost my files
though. I have a backup on a floppy, but when I try to
open it from the sample I get "files may be corrupted"
error.

Sorry, but what I have meant by not new is that I have had
the computer for over a year now and yes I bought it new,
nevertheless I went ahead and uninstalled everything and
so far is working fine, but I haven't finished
reinstalling all my softwares back.
I tried reinstalling the ones that Microsoft said could be
a problem and so far is working, but the netzero file it
hasn't updated to their latest version, so I'll see if
after that happens is still running.
Thanks.

I went ahead last night and started a clean formatting and
re-install everything.
After I finished with the recovery disk, the first one to
installed was Money 2004 and it worked, then I installed
all my hardware programs and antivirus in that order and
checked money after I finished with one at a time and it
was still working.
Last I did was to install the Netzero, which is the one
Microsoft says is creating the problem and checked Money
and was working, though Netzero hasn't updated to their
lates version.
I'll update netzero and after that is done will see if is
still working, but I believe that it might had been a file
that was downloaded from the internet and was creating a
conflict.
I'll keep you all posted on this matter, is just that it
takes a lot of time to back up everything and then re-
install it.
Thanks.

I finally fix the problem by formatting and re-installing
everything again (including Netzero)and it worked, I guess
I probably had a file that was creating a conflict with
money 2004 and with the formatting the file is not there
anymore, so it was probably something that I downloaded
from the internet.
Thanks.

Thanks for the update. Too bad it took drastic action to get you
going.

As a matter of fact that didn't completely fix the
problem, I just updated the Netzero program and Microsoft
Money stop working again, Their tech support says they
know about the problem, but haven't found a solution for
it and in the meantime I am not able to use a software
that just purchase, either that or take my pick in betwen
my internet provider or Microsoft Money.

Sorry to hear it. Perhaps you could look to see if there are any
environment variables that might be doing something weird. A long
shot, I know. Here is a case with different software involved:

I went ahead and formatted again last night and this time
still didn't work, so uninstalled the Money 2004 and re-
instaled it again and I was able to open it.
What I found is that as long as I don't click on the home
page view window and then basic, I won't have a problem,
but if I do, then it shots down and won't open again.
