I have Money 2005 Deluxe. I was adding a new online account and it instructed
me to sign in using Passport, which I did. I added the account without any
problem and then using password manager I removed passport authentication and
went back to a local password.

Now, I cannot get back into the account. I can see the data is still in the
account because the "My Money" screen comes up OK, but the program freezes at
that point and I cannot get any further.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Ian

Freezes for over ten minutes?

Try opening Money with Start->Run and entering
"msmoney -s" without the quotes into the box. That is probably not
going to be your cure, but it is worth a quick try.

After that, consider salv.exe, or restore a backup file by opening
Money by double-clicking that backup file with Windows Explorer.

Hi, Cal - thanks for the quick response. I really appreciate it.

I tried the suggestions to no avail, but I can load the backup file, so the
problem probably isn't Money itself.

Short of other ideas to rebuild what looks to be a corrupted file, do you
know of any way to bring accounts from the corrupted file into a new file so
that I don't have to rebuild all the entries since the last backup?

Also, are there any publicly available utilities to work with Money data
files?

Once again - many thanks.

Ian

See http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;274584
to try the salv.exe route if you have not already, but yes, there
is. QIF export+import.

If you want to do the QIF export/import, I would follow the steps
in http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;178830
except in the first step 4, I would suggest this: start the name of
the QIF file for the investment accounts with an underscore (_),
and start the name of QIF files for the cash accounts associated
with the investments with a letter. Thus you might have
_BrownInvestment.qif and BrownInvestmentCash.qif. This would cause
the investment account to be processed prior to the associated cash
account. When the BrownInvestment got created, you would specify
that you want to track the cash transactions. Then specify that
the cash transactions account for BrownInvestment was where the
BrownInvestmentCash.qif transactions get sent.

Then File->Import ALL AT ONCE using Ctrl+<click> to select files.
Specify "New or Recovered" account when asked.

Of course you will use a different filename for the new file, and
you will have both versions to choose from when done. I would also
set up the backups to make sure they are using different names.

Further comments:

That version referenced there could be newer than the one on your
Money CD.

In addition, there is another possibility. Export files to QIF. Then
restore a backup.

Use a text editor to remove most older transactions that are already
in the money file. Then merge the non-deleted transactions in by
File->Import the QIF files. Note that when you import as a
statement, Money looks for duplicates and expects you to approve he
transactions as if they were from a bank download. When you import
as a recovered account, Money does not look for duplicates.

Hi, Cal - thanks again for the quick response. Unfortunately, I still can't
get Money to open my primary .mny file. It opens the file and then
immediately just hangs.

Unfortunately, salvage didn't work, but I was wondering...Is there a utility
that enables exporting a .mny file to QIF without having to open Money
itself?

Thanks again,
Ian

No. The closest is MoneyLink
http://ultrasoft.com/MoneyLink/overview.shtml which could
potentially let you generate something from your data.

One of the tools at http://xl2qif.chez.tiscali.fr/links_en.php could
help you generate QIF from what you generate.

Is the problem with the home page?
Try opening up a different file (your backup, the Sample, or a "new" file)
and change the Home page to the Account List:

1. While in the othe file, click Tools, and then click Settings. Click
Program Settings.
2. Under Display, select Account List in the "Start Money with this page
open"
drop-down list.
3. Then return to your Money file by choosing its name on the File menu, and
check
if it can be opened properly now. If the main data file can be opened now,
customize its Homepage settings as follows:
a. Click Tools, and then click Settings. Click "Home page display options".
b. If Investment Performance is displayed under "Change Layout", click to
highlight
it, and then click "Remove".
c. Click Done.
