When I attempt to 'rename' an investment, I often get a message saying there
is another investment with the modified name.

These phantom investments do not exist in any account, regular or watch,
open or closed. Usually they do not have a ticker symbol -- just the name.
Perhaps they were used in a watch account a long time ago.

And before you point out the obvious, I have already looked for them in the
"Delete an Investment from all Accounts", and they are not there either,
regular or dim.

They only time I can see them is if I try to "Add a New Investment". I
almost never use this program, since my new investments are downloaded daily
by my broker.

These phantoms exist somewhere. Does anyone know how I can get rid of them?
It is messy!

Thank you

Just to make sure that I understand, you go to the Detail of an
investment. Without changing or even touching the symbol, you click
Rename. You make a change in the NewName box, and click OK. At that
point you get the message that says there is another investment with
the modified name.

Is that what you are saying?

If so, instead of changing the name to Newco, change it to Newco2,
for example.

If on the other hand you are touching the symbol also, then that is
probably where the problem come from. Post back with that info in
that case.

If you are trying to delete an old investment, enter a fake dividend
for the old investment. At that point, you should be able to blank
its symbol and change the name to zzzz1 or some such. You could also
then delete any transactions and "delete" the investment. The action
of deleting an investment differs with versions, and in the older
versions, "delete" really only hides it, even if you have no
transactions in that investment.
