I hope someone out there has some ideas as I really don't want to lose 3
years of my Money transactions.
Yesterday I reformatted my computer. Before I did, I opened Money 2005,
saved the "MyMoney.mny" file and also created a backup file. I saved both of
these files onto a DVD and went ahead with the reformat.
After I was done I installed Money 2005, got the update, and everything
seems to work until I try to open the "Mymoney.mny" or restore the backup
files I backed up. Money opens the files without error, and I see a popup for
a split second with a progress bar going across as expected, but after
everything seems to be loaded, nothing is there. It's as if I've opened a
fresh new file. No accounts/bills or anything. I also tried the "repair"
feature but nothing seems to be wrong with the files I'm trying to restore.
The MyMoney.mny file is 4megs in size so I believe it does have all my info.
One note if this makes any difference...
My computer came with a set of 3 cds for this reformat I did, in addition to
installing Windows XP (Home), a basic verion of Money 2004 is installed. I
didn't think about it, but in order to run the included Money 2004 I needed
to accept a EULA and such, which I didn't do after the reformat, I just
installed the Money 2005 which removed the 2004. Should I have gotten the
2004 up and running or uninstalled that version before trying to install the
2005?

Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions.

Copy the big "MyMoney.mny" from the DVD to Chazz5.mny. In Money
2005, do File->Open of Chazz5.mny.

Does that do it?

No, same thing. It opens and acts like it is opening everything up as it
takes a few seconds, but none of my info is there once it's open. I tried
renaming the backup file I made and renamed it, still nothing.

That is very strange. How large are the .mny and .mbf files that you
are reading off of the DVD/R?

The My Documents folder is usually a good place to copy the files
to. When you try the *.mbf file, it is usually a good idea to not
restore to the default location but to browse to a location to
restore to.

Chazz,
Make sure the file you copied to the hard drive is not still marked as
read-only.

Money needs to update the file the entire time it is open and will act
funny if it can't.

The .mny file is about 3.8mb in size, the backup is about the same (a little
smaller). I did try your suggestion, I made a new folder on my desktop and
moved the backup file I made into it, then restored to a subfolder inside
that one. Still the same thing. I am 100% sure these files (the mymoney.mny
and the back up I made) are the correct files to be using and everything.
Everything else I backed up onto that DVD has been fine, no disc errors or
anything.

Is it possible to open a 2005 backup in the 2004 program? I kind of doubted
it would work but I'm ready to try anything. I don't know what else the
problem can be, when I installed Money 2005 weeks ago,I had no problems
upgrading from 2004. Very strange indeed.

Thanks for the suggestion. I actually already checked that as I ran into
that problem trying to open the .mny file direct from the DVD. I got an error
saying something about not having access, but I don't get that error when I
move the .mny file off of the disc. As I said before, it acts like it's
actually opening someting, but there is just nothing there.

3.8 MB is larger than an empty file, but fairly small for one that
has been in use for a year.

No.

With Help->AboutMicrosoftMoney do you show your version as
14.0.125.825?

You can check that in Windows Explorer (windowsKey+E) by
right-clicking the file and choosing Properties. The Read-only box
at the bottom should be unchecked.

Hi Chazz235

I have not read the whole thread, but have you tried to just double click
the file you want to open rather than using the open or restore feature.
Many times in the past when I was having major problems with Money, I found
the method of double clicking the file I wanted open or restored would open
files that the file commands would not open.
