Automatically assigning categories

How do I get Money to automatically assign a category? This feature works for
some payees and not others. I canâ??t find where I can set a category for a
payee so that every time I get a payment from them it auto assigns the
category. I'm having to spend ages each month assigning a category to same
payees time and time again...

What version/edition? Downloaded transactions? Are Payee names really the
same or do they have variants like store number or some such? Have you
checked Tools|Settings for autocomplete?

I enter 100% of my data by hand and don't spend ages each month doing it.
How just assigning categories takes ages is a mystery.

Allow me to solve your mystery.

I am using small business 2005. Sincce I just switch over from another
money program, the downloads occured all at once. Most were categorized.
There's about 70 that are not. I can go through one by one assigning
categories or I can find an option to assign categories by payee. They were
not downloaded with the same name, so that becomes a little more difficult.
Yes, I tried your suggestions already. No help.

Almost nobody who uses * Business editions of Money helps other users here.

That having been said, perhaps I can answer one of your questions, though
not definitively for a Business edition. Money (at least non-Business
editions) does not have a way to specify a default category for a payee.
That's kinda like specifying a default phone number for a zip code. It can,
however, learn ways to figure out a Payee name from a range of possible
payee names (see "rules manager" in help) and to carry forward a prior
category for a given Payee to a new transaction with the same payee. How
exactly the UI does this when you are accepting downloaded transactions is a
mystery to me since I am a curmudgeon and skip all of this new-fangled
download data mangling stuff. Others will have to jump in here.
