Hello,

I'm running M04 and thinking of upgrading to M05 or Quicken05
Has anyone made a choice yet?
I would like to hear your opinions.

Thanks

Money 05 stinks. It will take them many versions to recover from this.

I would not upgrade to M05. See http://umpmfaq.info/Money2005.htm for more
on that. As to converting to Q05, there have been some people reporting that
plan. There is not a great migration path for all of your data. That's the
killer issue.

I wish they would sell the product to another company. That would get us a
whole new set of developers.

Interesting thought. I'm not sure that the profitability problem wouldn't
kill that.

If Microsoft sells 1M copies a year at $5 gross margin (after cost of sales
of a package with a CD in a DVD case going out the door at Sam's Club for
$23). That's only $5M to cover support, quotes servers, et al., Yodlee, and
new product development. That's clearly a loser. $5M per year in the US will
cover, say, 25 employees to do the support and product development and so on
by the time you pay them and provide cubicles and lighting and insurance and
so on.

1M copies is a SWAG and I was only thinking retail, not OEM. Say I'm WAY
off. Say it's 20M copies a year worldwide OEM+retail. Up the gross per copy
to $10. That's $200M per year to cover support for the retail users, quotes
servers, et al., Yodlee, and new product development. That might be a
winner.

The truth is probably somewhere in the middle, at best.

I just went out and bought both M05 and Q05 prior to moving from M04. I
must say that after serious testing I will upgrade to M05 but will not use
MSN online stuff. Q05 really dissapointed me even though they have made
some nice changes. If you stay offline from MSN I would recommend M05 to
anyone. Still a few budget quirks but for the most part the best package.

Larry,

Can you explain why Quicken failed your test?

Thanks...

If already on '04 and stay offline from MSN there's no great benefit to
upgrading. I do everything possible online but not including synching with
MSN. I'm happy with '04 for that purpose. Outside the online issue, the
bugs/quirks/inadequacies in '04 do not seem to have been
resolved/revised/improved in '05.

I am running Q05 Premier and M05 Premium now. I plan to do a long
post to Usenet News after I gain some experience.

There is one thing about M05 Premium that really bothers me: I cannot
figure out how to do a retirement planner without going online with
MSN.com. I do not use MSN.com or Yodlee or Passport. I believe that
the *KEY TO SUCCESS* with Microsoft Money is to avoid these three
entities. But I would still like to do a retirement plan in Money.

As for Quicken, the most irksome aspect for me is Intuit's hostility
to the .QIF format for importing and exporting data. I was concerned
that the financial institutions that I deal with would refuse to use
the new QFX format, since it benefits Intuit more than anyone else.
So far, I have not suffered any loss of connectivity with my banks,
brokers, etc. Perhaps my concern is unnecessary.

I have to agree with Chris--

I tried the '05 trial and decided to stick with '04. I didn't see anything
that '05 does better than '04, and there are a few things about '05 that I
truly don't like: Not having the option to enter subcategories seperate
from the main category; larger icons resulting in less screen real estate
for the register/report viewing; even more advertising/sponsorship than '04;
and the biggie--having to be extra vigilant to keep '05 from going on-line
at will.

I really don't like applications that go online when ever they feel like it.
Although, I doubt if Microsoft would actually access data on my computer
through Money, I'm just uncomfortable with the fact that they could do this
unless I block it through my Firewall. Allowing Money to have access
whenever it feels like, just makes my computer a little more vulnerable. If
I block Money with my firewall, then it's a pain to tell my firewall to
allow it access when I want to get quotes, etc. Also, in 05 the help files
(should I need them) are not accessible unless I'm on-line!!!

Microsoft has also reduced the time that online quotes will be available in
05-deluxe to two years (in 04 it's three years) so quotes will expire for
both products at the same time.

I'm quite happy with '04--I'm not sure why people feel the need to upgrade
each year (including myself)...but this year, I'm resisting the urge--

dordale :-)

Microsoft has even shortened the period that the

I switched to Q05 2 weeks ago and have really had no problems except one. I
pay bills online and signed up an account to receive my bill electronically.
It said to duplicate my account number, which I did, spaces included. I
received a declin back from the company and they told me to resubmit without
the spaces in my account number. I cannot change the account number and I am
not allowed to add the account agian as I get an error message that says the
account is already there. Quicken billpay cannot seem to get this fixed yet.
Other than this I have NO prblems with the synching with banks, except B of
A as the will not be switching to OFX until the midddle of December. Quicken
is FAR faster than Money however the interface is not as easy as Money's. I
am keeping both M05 and Q05 up to date in hopes that MS will eventually fix
their horrible mistakes. Quicken also has quite a bit on the tax assignments
over money, so it may be better for end of the year taxes. GOOD LUCK if you
choose Money!
