I've had this trouble since it first came out of beta. I searched, and
tried re registering msiexec. To no avail. I read about a solution that
involved altering the installer itself, but if I can, I'd avoid that.
Here is the error:
http://s12.imagehosting.us/uploadpoint/imagehosting_upload_storage/nouser_1699/T0_-1_1699455.jpg
I read that running the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility would do it,
but running that gave me an error too, before it could do anything.
I realise Messenger is free, but I imagine MS would prefer me using it
over a competitors product. Any further help would be appreciated.

Greetings,

Are you seeing any other errors besides the 1603? The 1603 message basically means the
install wasn't successful. It should give you an actual error message (or at least another
code) before the 1603 one.

It sounds like you've found all the typical problems and solutions already too.

Prior to that, it just says installing Windows Live Messenger was not
successful. No changes were made to your computer. Then I hit okay, and
then get the 1603 error. The event viewer doesn't give anything else
besides installation was not successful. Guess I am still out of luck
for now. I'll try and get the Installer Cleanup utility to work, and
hopefully that will work.

Hi Bozlo,

Yeah the Event Viewer would be the next place to look, hard to say what the problem is if
it's not reporting anything. Another thing you can do is if you have another PC with WLM
installed, you can simply copy over the files in Program Files\MSN Messenger to the new PC
and it should be okay. Some functionality like Sharing Folders won't work though.
