Due to repeated Registry errors I have uninstalled MSN Messenger v5.0
and installed the previous v4.6 which now appears to have solved the
problem with Windows 98 SE starting. I may have to use v4.6
indefinitely.

I am now getting frequent reminders that a new version is available for
download:

1) A popup up dialogue box in the System Tray when I logon onto MSN that
drops away after about 40 seconds.
2) A banner-ad type pane in the MSN Messenger v4.6 GUI that persists
throughout the session.

Are there any tweaks to get rid of or hide these reminders?

Greetings Richard,

If you close down MSN Messenger (right-click its icon in the system tray and choose Exit),
then download and run this .reg file:
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/downloads/disableupdate_all.reg
will disable the update reminders.

This won't do anything about the bottom banner ad however.
