    - messenger conversations won't start I was trying to use msn messenger with my mom last night and we had great difficulties. In the end we both disabled our firewalls (ie turned them off), and I bypassed my router. Still, we were not able to initiate a conversation. We were both logged in and could see that each other was on- line. I double-clicked her name and a conversation window would pop-up. The conversation window would not pop-up on her computer. Then when she double-clicked my name, she would get a conversation window to pop-up but I wouldn't see it! We both logged in and out and a couple of times with no change. Finally I sent her an inviation for a video conference. At this point both of us received the conversation window pop-up and we could chat and see each other. My mic and her audio was working, but I couldn't hear anything she was saying. Does anyone have any explanation as to what is happening here? Or any tips on how to get around it?     - Irritated with support in MSN Ok I posted here quite a while ago on issues with MSN and nothing seems to be improving with it. I asked that we hear the incoming messages when playing a game or fullscreen application. It doesn't work despite selecting the option in configuration. I still get messages while I am in games I cannot ALT TAB from and risk missing extremely important messages. I am now getting signed out of MSN and MSN tells me someone else signed in with my id from another machine. This has got to be bogus since I don't have another machine running MSN and I even changed my password to a very hard password with numbers and no real words. Yet still I get these messages randomly. Window sizing. You can't resize windows the way you want without disabling the side pictures etc. So i got big honking MSN windows that seem to have a forced 'small size' When upgrading my MSN, I lose 50% of my contact organization. Meaning I create groups for my contacts, upgrade and they get moved to new contact. Arrggghhh. I asked a long time ago for a feature similar to click on a group to block all the members but instead a similar action to message all persons in the group. This feature is not there still. Another problem issue is Windows Messenger. Why can't you disable this from startup when MSN Messenger is installed? Windows Messenger simply serves for remote access etc, so if I am installing MSN Messenger, surely, the idea is the person simply wants MSN Messenger and not both Messengers loading up.     - different ways to sign in Hello, I have MSN 6.1 By a friend of my (who has the same version as I do) he can login by selecting e-mail adresses wich al already typt in. But by mine, I have to type every time my e-mail adres if I want to logon with another e-mail adres.     - Messenger 6.1 keeps restarting by itself When I sign on to Messenger 6.1 I see the dancing pawns for a few seconds and the confirmation message: SIGNING IN. Then my buddy list will appear for a moment showing who's online and then Messenger suddenly RESTARTS itself to the signin screen. This happens about three times in a row without me touching a thing. Finally it gives up and the signin screen just sits there. Meanwhile my friends have seen the little systray toaster popup with "Paul has just signed in" three times in a row. I called MSN tech support and they told me to go back to 5.0! I asked to have them give me back 6.0 but they said it was no longer available for download! Where can I get a copy of 6.0?     - Messenger 6.1 and Browsing Problem I have a 2 PC network via a Vigor2200e router (factory default settings) on NTL Broadband. 1 PC uses MSN Messenger 6.1 (6.1.0203) and the other 5.0 (5.0.0543). When using the PC with version 6.1, after a while, all internet browsing fails with all sites tried returning 'page not found' etc. I have no such problem when using the PC with version 5.0.     - OK. I give up! I can't get messenger to work. Sure I can send video, I can even receive video. But I can't get video all of the time and audio remains a distant dream. Older hands tell me that netmeeting was easy. So I would reasonably assume that Messenger improved on that. Big mistake. So what am I doing wrong? Is there a site that contains the equivalent of an idiot's guide? because after three weeks of trying I'm becoming seriously *!$%*. My system is a standard Dell P4 2.5Ghz config with Turtle Beach sound card, XP Home Edition. Because I live in the equivalent of the UK's outback ASDL is but a distant hope - it's good old dial up at 28.8k. Help welcomed.     - Can't Sign In to MSN Messenger Whenever I try to sign into MSN messenger it says: "sorry, we could not sign you in because the sign-in name you entered does not exist or your password is incorrect. No problem with video but the audio is a pain. Fine one day then the same problems the next day, and it takes a few rounds with the wizard before it is OK. Any thoughts?     - MSN 6.0 Games I have recently reverted to MSN 6.0 as the instability of 6.1 is alarming. I'd be grateful if anyone can shed some light on a problem I'm having with the Games (Launch site)... (I have unchecked the 'always ask me for my password...' in the Privacy Tab - no different) Regardless of whether I initiate or respond to a Game request (eg Checkers), the screen is expanded, with 'Connecting' being displayed.     - Three dlls? Jonathan -- please see my last post re: rtcdll files; I'd like to rule this problem out. Today I noticed that my AOL DialUp network connection (which I never use because I have cable) was disconnected and firewalled. It wouldn't let me change properties, so I deleted it to see if it would have any effect on garbled audio. It didn't make any difference. I would greatly appreciate your opinion/suggestion and comments on this and last post re: dlls. By the way, I renamed the three dlls, uninstalled MSN and Windows Messenger, reinstalled both, and only two dlls showed up. Don't know if this means anything.     - MSN Messenger via proxy Anyone has problem when connecting MSN messenger or even Windows Messenger via HTTP proxy? Now, I'm using MSN Messenger 6.1.0203 and Windows Messenger 5.0. I just assumed that some part of Windows Messenger has been used as a base IM for MSN Messenger as well. After I captured network packet to see why I could not sign on, I found out that the MSN Messenger was trying to reach 207.x.x.x which probably be 'messenger.hotmail.com' instead of connecting to my proxy.     - application sharing in msn I am trying to use application sharing with my dad. we are able to do both audio and video in xp with msn 6.1. I have tried to use the application sharing both behind the linksys firewall on my side and infront of it. My Dad is using black ice and has it turned off. We both get the message "application sharing waiting" below the apps and chalk board. Same problem in windows messenger. I am able to bring up and use Net Meeting and the application sharing between us.     - MSN Messenger 6.1 vs Windows Messenger Im getting confused. I thought that Windows Messenger (WM) is only for XP. MSN Messenger (MSNM) is for older OSs but works under XP.     - Unicows error on installing msn 6.1 Hi, I am hoping that someone can help me. I had an older version of msn messenger on my computer but it was accidentally deleted/uninstalled. I am not sure how - little sister can't remember what she did! I tried to download and install 6.1 but when it tries to install it comes up with the following error: error - a dynamic link library (DLL) initialization routine failed. UNICOWS.DLL I contacted msn help and they suggested that I uninstall MSN, Download Microsoft Layer for Unicode from the Microsoft site, reboot and then download msn messenger again. I downloaded the unicode file from microsoft into c:drive programme files but was then advised to download it into programme files: msn messenger - I have done this and overwritten the unicows.dll file that was in there. Rebooted and tried again. Unfortunately I am still having problems. I am also now getting this message when I go into my inbox for hotmail. I wrote back to msn help and they thought that I might need to execute the unicows.exe file - I haven't got a file called unicows.exe! I have double clicked on the unicows.dll file and it comes up with the "open with" window - I haven't a clue what to open it with! I was also told to run a windows update which I have done and also have updated Explorer to 6.0.2800.1106IS and you've guessed it I still have the problem!! I can Audio to work with MSN Messenger 6.1, but only after creating a Firewall rule for Norton Internet Securtiy 2004(NIS) which allows inbound UDP communication from any computer, through any local or remote port. I am having disconnection problems that I have requested help for twice on this site but no one seems to have an answer. What is happening is that messenger will log out and will ask me if I want to log back in. If decline it will wait a short time and then log in automatically. I do not want this.     - MSN Messenger 6.1 / annoyance + bug Hi, Today when I turned on my PC I noticed that my Messenger contact were now all in the Other Contacts category and there there were 3 new categories added: Coworkers, Family and Friends. I am not aware of having accepted or installed anything, so perhaps my wife accidentally clicked something. This is annoying but I can delete these groups again, so that's okay. HOWEVER, in an attempt to use these groups I tried moving two family members into the Family category, and in each case I got the message "Cannot move [username] to the group Family". Okay, so nevermind the categories but Messenger DELETED the users it wouldn't move...! I tried replicating this with another contact whom I moved the Friends category and there was no problem. Then I tried moving that contact back to the Other Contacts group, which was refused. Then I created a new group and moved one contacts up there sucessfully - but the next one got deleted. What gives? I'm normally a soft-spoken person, but I am beginning to think Messenger is a piece of junk I'm using WXP Pro SP1 with all publicly available patches plus NIS/NAV 2003, and my Messenger is version 6.1.0155.
