Lately, I've been logging all of my conversations and keeping them to be
'transparent' to my spouse. She inquired about a conversation I had nearly
two months ago, and I was unable to find this particular log in my records.
In fact, Anything past two months ago is gone - all of the conversations I
had, even the rather unimportant ones. Is there anyway to get a fresh log
sent to me? There are two particular screen names I need my logs re-sent
about and I'm at the end of my rope. Tell me there's a solution!

Virus and/or hacking problem with Windows Messenger
I'm running Windows XP Pro SP2 and Windows Messenger v5.1.0701
About 10 days ago, I received 2 IM's, several hours apart, from one of
my contacts. Both of them asked me to go to unknown websites, a
different site in each message. I was very suspicious and cautious,
because I had never received this kind of IM before. The website from
the first message asked me to login with my MSN account and password. I
refused to do so. I never visited the website from the second message.
I sent an email to my contact and asked him if he had originated these 2
IM's. His answer was that he had not, and that many of his other
contacts had reported the same thing happening to them. He suspects
either he has a virus which is exploiting his Messenger account, or
someone has hacked into his account and is using it.
I shut down Messenger on my end and left it off until today. When I
re-started Messenger I had a notice that someone I have never heard of
has added me as a contact. I blocked that person from contacting me. His
ID is Brooke, his email and Sign-in name are brookesised@hotmail.com,
and his service is .NET Messenger Service.
I see how to remove him from *my* contact list. Is there any way for me
to remove myself from *his* contact list?
Is this something new, or is this a known and documented exploit? Is
there a fix for my contact, who apparently is the victim?

Both websites I mention resolve to 202.75.218.244 - and there are over
600 websites at that IP address. I suspect there are a few more such
sites at that IP address
If so, there are many more MSN Messenger/Hotmail IDs, all being used
for 'customer service'

reading this newsgroup - or perhaps Jonathan Kay can inform the abuse

MSN lost contacts + they're blocked
A few days ago I noticed that I lost several hotmail.com e-mails from my
inbox dating back to the 6th of april 2008, and my sent folder in hotmail
also got affected with losing all sent e-mails back to the 9th of december
2007...
Now today this morning I signed into my MSN and instantly prompted with
accepting about 28 adding request... seeing on my msn list that I only had
about 1-2 in each of my 6 different groups folders :-|
Those 28 adding request are ones I got chat logs with on this labtop, I
added a dear friend instantly back to the list and saw that the friend was
blocked! So unblocked her instantly of course. Checking my blocking list
figuring all of my other lost contacts were blocked as well :S
What is happening here? Hacked/virus? I was on msn for roughly 8-10 hours

Windows Live Messenger
I've been told by friends that everytime I log in apparoximately 8 windows
pop up in their screen showing them that I'm online and in 5 seconds they
dissapear. I never log in online myself but invisible. Everytime my sister
log in I can see those boxes in my screen so I know what they are referring

Can't enable the message history function
I have tried two times to reinstall the messenger, but in each time it turned
out that when I click into the options, The two checkboxes and text under the
message history got grey, and I couldn't check the boxes.

can't update tried everything...please help
I have been unable to update my Windows Live Messenger. I have tried removing
and reinstalling but it still will not install. I had to find an older
version to load to be able to use the service. I am getting messages that I
need to update....It loads fine to a temp file. When I click run it takes
about a good minute for anything to happen. Then it says it is installing but
locks up. I get a general error message stating that the Windows Live Suite
failed to install code: 0x80070643 Fatal error during installation.
I have spoken to MSN, to Qwest etc. All say there is an error with Windows
Installer but they can not tell me how to fix it. I can run and install other
programs with no problems. As of now it is more of a bother due to the
constant reminding to update, but soon I fear it will not run at all with the

No list window
My contact list window will not show. I am running Windows Live Messenger on
Windows XP. Each time I click the Messenger Icon I get another occurrence of
Messenger running according to the Task Manager. I have reinstalled
Messenger and I have also uninstalled and reinstalled all to no avail. Can

Message could not be delivered to all recipients
I get this error when I start a conversation with one particular WLM contact.
All my messages to this contact get rejected until I close the IM window, and
the contact initiates the IM session with me. Once the other person
initiates an IM session with me, my messages to the person are successful.
This contact is having the same problem with the other people who attempt to
IM him. Nobody seems to be able to contact him, until he contacts them first.
The contact and I are using WLM v2008 Build 8.5.1302.1018.
I dont have the problem with other people I send IMs to.
Googling this error message shows forums in which other people have been
reporting this problem for over a year, but no solutions. One possible tip
was to reset message logging. This contact and I are not logging messages.

terrible voice during video chat
Hi, I am recently having problem with MSN video chat with my parents
in China. The voice chat alone is normal. But once I started video
chat, then their voice is terrible on my end (delayed, discontinuous,
barely audible). Strangely, my parents said they could hear my voice
clearly without a problem. I have a much better computer (2GB memory,
160 GB HD, 2 years old) than what they have (256MB memory, 10 GB HD,
>6 years old). I have asked my DSL service provider (ATT) to upgrade
my service twice (Pro now, with 3MB Down and 512 KB Up). In addition,
I have no problem at all with video chatting with friends in US.
What could be the problem? It seems it's not the problem of the DSL
speed since I have upgraded twice and it doesn't improve at all. I
used a web DSL speed test (server located in Los angeles, I am in San
Diego) to check my DSL speed and mine is normal, and checked my
parents' computer DSL speed in China, the result is 100KB Down and 300
KB Up. So it looks like their upload is good, then why I can't hear
their voice clearly even I have an excellent download speed on my end?
And because their Download speed is poor, however, they can still hear
my voice without problem. I am just totally confused here.
Or maybe it's their computer is too old? However, about 1 year ago, I
have no problem to video chat with them on the same 2 computers. They
then visited us here for 6 months and then went back to china, and
since then, the video chat started to have problem.

Will not load up
Hi, I am running Messenger 8.1.178 but I can't get it to load up. I've
removed & re-installed it. It appears in my program list but when I go to
start it, all that happens is that the msn icon (blue man green man) appears
on the taskbar with a red circle / white cross. If I press again, another
icon appears alongside the last one. If I move the mouse over them, they just
disappear! I'm on XP

Not able to download the latest version of MSN Messenger
Just recieved a company issued laptop running XP sp3 & MSN Messenger version
4.7.3001. I attempted to upgrade Messenger to the latest version but
Microsoft Live Installler errors out. I have plenty of disk space, the

I have the latest LIVE MESSENGER and whn I start it it works for awhile

I have been searching me head off for a similar option on my Vista notebook

Our users have MSN Live messenger version 8.1.
They don't have admin rights to install.
I would like to update to the latest version.
I looked for a full installation file and didn't find one. The installation
file is a small 2mb file that does a local download.
It will be very time consuming to install this way on over 100
workstations...

I installed Windows Live 8.5. All went fine and it seems working fine.
At the same time old MSN Messenger folder still present and you can run the
old one too???
How can I get rid of it?
I tried suggested:
- removing from Components shows some activities and after finishing old
folder remains intact;
- this command
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\inf\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove
gives me "Access Denied" despite I am running as Administrator ???
- running msicuu.exe doesn't show MSN Messenger at all
Is there any way to remove the old one from the system?
Can I just delete folder and do registry cleanup?

I am trying to install Windows Live Messenger in Windows Vista. I go straight
to the download link from this page:

I can get the Windows Live Messenger Setup Wizard open without a problem. I
accept the terms, click next, and make my way to the screen that says

There's a progress bar. But it's not moving at all! I'll wait about 30
minutes, and the progress is still at 0%.
I've tried clearing out my Internet Explorer temporary files and increasing
the disk space use for temporary internet files (it's at 100 MB). I also
turned off the firewall.
Why does the installation just freeze like that?

Since monday that my MSN message does not change to others. If I log in as
busy and listening to music "A", I will stay busy and listening to "A" until
the next time I log in, even If I change my status to any other and the songs
change.
In my MSN it does change, but for other people I am always the same...

Best way to install newest WLM on dialup?
It looks like the WLM installer is somekind of online Windows Live download.
Before, I download the old installer, uninstalled MSN Messenger 7, and then
installed WLM offline. What's the best way to do it now?
Also, I remember many things to pick from that I don't think I need on
dialup using the MSN Explorer software. (Like the toolbar, etc) When parts
are absolutely necessary for WLM to function properly? And to let MSN
Explorer and connection center continue to fuction properly?

I am trying to signup a list of people for MSN messenger and I can do about 3
or 4 and then it gives me:

I accidentlly clicked on a link from a friend in my IM.
Now my IM is sending out links all the time, even though I have uninstalled
IM, ran my virus scan and spyware, then re-installed. I have only signed in
once, but people continue to receive messages from me (different each time).
It appears to pull part of my IM email and other words to it, making it look
like a personal webpage.
