I have software for my Canon camcorder that Canon won't help me with because
I have MSN messenger 7.0 installed rather than Windows Messenger 4.5. Is
that a reasonable stance for Canon to take?

you should bitch out their Tech support.

How is the Canon camera connected? Via USB/Firewire? Video-In to some
Video Card?

Only if they were going to use windows messenger for real-time support to
type/talk you thru the steps in the repair as you were doing it. msn
messenger is not secure (neither is windows messenger but better)
