please forgive my bumbling ineptitude ....
whenever i log in to my msn premium account, i get two
confusing pop up message from the msn messenger icon on
the taskbar. the first: 'you have signed into messenger
on another computer. click here to sign in again'
immediately after that message is closed, the second one
pops up and explains to me that 'you have been signed
out of NET messenger service because you signed in at a
different location.'

i really hope this is not a stupid question and i want
you to know that i have utilized the resources available
to me to try and figure this out on my own. and imagine
that, im not figuring it out. can someone help me
understand?

thank you for your polite attention despite your busy
schedule. -angela

Are you running XP with fast user switching enabled? And if you are have
you switched users and logged in a second time to IM? Or have you logged it
to IM both with Windows Messenger and with MSN messenger?

Greetings Angela,

Sounds like Windows Messenger is running in the background. To do so, open it up (click
Start, then Run, type "msmsgs" and click OK), click Tools, Options, Preferences tab and
uncheck 'Run this Program when Windows starts' or 'Run Windows Messenger when Windows starts'
(depending on version) as well as 'Allow this program to run in the background' or 'Allow
Windows Messenger to run in the background' (depending on version). This won't remove Windows
Messenger, so features like Remote Assistance, Whiteboard and Application Sharing will
continue to work, but it will let it stay out of your way.

Also, do you have Norton Antivirus installed? Recent versions of Norton Antivirus added a
new "instant messaging scanning" feature, which can conflict with Messenger and cause it to
also keep starting. To stop it, open Norton Antivirus (Right-click on the Norton Antivirus
icon in the System Tray/Notification Area (by the clock), choose 'Open Norton Antivirus'),
click Options, then Instant Messenger then uncheck MSN Instant Messenger and click OK.

You may want to reboot after this to make sure that Windows Messenger still isn't running.
