Several months ago I did a "trial" period for MSN8. I
loaded MSN8 off their CD and after two days and 7
telephone calls to Microsoft Support, we all agreed that
their MSN8 software was, for some reason no one wanted to
figure out, not going to work on my computer. OK, fine.
I did a "remove" on all the MSN software from my disk and
went with another ISP. But here's my problem:
somehow .NET Messenger was loaded with the MSN8 software
(I know this because it was configured using my
temporary "msn" log-on that I no longer use) and I can
not remove it and it keeps popping up every time I
connect to the internet with a warning that I am not
using the latest version, yadda, yadda. It won't do
anything because I have it locked behind a Zone Alarm
firewall but it is irritating. I just as soon not have a
piece of buggy software on my computer. So if I go
to "My Computer" and try to "add/remove" programs, it
does not appear on the list. Nor does it appear on the
list on the left side of the window for adding/removing
Windows components. I can not find anything on
Microsoft's website about removing this program. I guess
they do not want you to do that. But I want it gone.
How can I remove .NET Messeneger totally from my system?

Thanks in advance.

Greetings,

Are you using Windows XP? I assume so, since MSN8 comes with MSN Messenger 5 which would not
be showing you the warning message (as well, it would show up under Add or Remove Programs).
Windows XP comes with its own .NET Messenger client called Windows Messenger, which is what
most likely is logging you in and showing you this message.

You can remove Windows Messenger, but if you do, some features within Windows (like Remote
Assistance) will no longer work. Instead, the easiest solution would be just to disable it.
To do so, click Start, then All Programs, then Windows Messenger, click the Tools menu, then
Options, then Preferences, uncheck 'Run this program when Windows starts' and then click OK.
You might also want to remove your saved Passport information (which is what is automatically
signing you in), by clicking the Start Button, then click the Control Panel. Then, click
User Accounts in the Control Panel. Select your account name, and then on the left side of
the screen, under Related Tasks, click 'Manage my Network Passwords'. In the window that
opens, click the Passport.Net\* (Passport) entry and click 'Remove'.

Hello, Jonathan,

I am using Windows XP. My computer was purchased a year
ago.

The actual warning window that comes up is titled: ".NET
Messenger Service Staff - Conversation" and a warning
follows that "Staff can't reply because he or she is not
on my allow list". That may have something to do with
the fact that I ave not given Zone Alarm permission to
let this talk to the internet.

Anyway, I click on START then ALL PROGRAMS but I can not
find a Windows Messenger choice in the big table list.
It is not even under any of the headings. It is not
there. Where may it be?

Thanks,

Phil

Hi Phil,

You may have removed the shortcut, to start Windows Messenger (and get its window open),
click Start, then Run, enter "msmsgs" and click OK.
