I am having a problem that I can not connect to transfer files or have an
audio conversation using MSN Messenger 7.0. The other party accepts the
invitation to connect, but it never completes. I am connected through a
router here, so could that be my problem. Also, I am using avast! AV with
the Instant Messaging protection. Thanks in advance for any assistance with
this issue.

In MSN Messenger, Tools|Options|Connection. In the "Advanced Connection
Information" section, what do you see? I have, "You are connected to the
Internet through a UPnP IP restricted NAT". I get that because I have a
router with UPnP enabled. If you don't have that message, you either
haven't enabled UPnP on your router, or your router isn't able to handle
UPnP requests from TCP/IP clients (aside from MSN Messenger 7.0, I have a
BitTorrent client, BitTornado, which uses UPnP to control the router
ports).

I have the message:
"You are connected to the Internet through a non-UPnP IP restricted NAT.
(Administrator)
Is this why I can't connect to send files or have audio conversations?

Pretty much. Which router are you using?

LinkSys BEFSR41

I checked the company website and it says that it does support UPnP, so why
is MSN Messenger saying that I am connected through a non-UPnP IP restricted
NAT.

You found the menu to enable UPnP in the router. I have a Linksys BEFSR11
which did not have UPnP capability when I bought it (its a v.1); but I have
the latest firmware, and the option to enable UPnP.
