Hi, I just reinstalled Windows XP and the first thing i
did was attempt to sign in with Windows Messenger 4.7 and
it still doesn't work and it gives me the same
connection "failed" message. Afterwards, i installed MSN
Messenger 6.1 and i get the same results. So obviously
it's not my computer and it has something to do with the
connection or MSN itself...Btw, internet connection works
fine!! Further suggestions would be appreciated!

before they look into the problem. Unfortunately MSN Messenger is not one of
their supported problems.

HI Ashkan,

I have some contacts that are using Cox and they haven't had any disruption with Messenger --
so I honestly don't believe your ISP is at fault (not completely impossible of course).

Well, all i have to say is it's not my computer. I have
two computers and i reinstalled windows xp on one of them
and without changing or installing anything, i tried
windows messenger. Couldn't sign-in. Finally i installed
Messenger 6.1 and still can't login. So it's not my
computer and it's got something to do with the Messenger
itself or COX connection (although i have an internet
connection that works fine...). What is wrong?!

Re: 0x81000301 problem by Eric

Hi guys,

Jonathan:

1) I too have been unable to connect.
2) I use Cox High Speed Internet (Newport Beach, CA).
3) I have a friend who also uses Cox, and has had no
problems (Irvine, CA...which is a neighboring city).

I agreed with you that it was unlikely that an ISP would
be to blame for this. However, I decided to do a quick
test.

I diabled my network adapter, and hence my connection to
Cox (and my network). Then I connected to the internet
the old-fashioned way...I plugged in a phone cord and
dialed-up with my 56K modem to Net Zero. No sooner than
my username and password were accepted....MSN Messenger
sucessfully signed in (the first time in days!!!)

I concluded of course that it is not my PC or any of the
software, cookies, temp files, etc. on it casuing the
problem. Else, I would not have been able to sign-on via
Net Zero either.

Only two possibilities exist:
1) My wireless Linksys Cable Router is at fault (or at
least one of the settings)
2) My ISP....Cox High Speed Internet.

Since it seems unlikely that all of us complaining would
have router/firewall, etc. type problems at the same time
(especially since it IS likey that we all have different
equipment), I can only conclude it has to be Cox.

I gave them a call, and they have no knowledge of any type
of problem. Nor will they attempt any type of solution.

I ran "netstat -n 5" from a command window as I attempted
to sign-on through COX. Each time the connection failed, I
clicked RETRY and watched as the info scrolled by. I see
the same thing over and over:

Attempts to connect via:

207.46.104.20:80 or 207.46.104.20:1863

When I ping this IP using "ping -a" it resolves the
hostname to messenger.hotmail.com, but the request always
times out.

I wish I could suggest a solution....but this one is
tough. Hopefully someone can put all the facts together
and figure this out.

-Eric

You mean Microsoft not only wants to hog the entire software market to
themselves but also all tech support?
You'd think you'd be happy that other people are freely helping others to
fix problems with YOUR software :-)

Hey Eric, I am in Irvine and having this exact same
problem and as I posted in my previous reply, i completely
reinstalled my Windows and the first thing i did was try
to log in to MSN Messenger using several different
versions and it doesn't work. I am not using a router and
didn't install anything on the new installation like i
mentioned (firewall, programs, etc.). So the problem
finally leads to COX. There may be a problem with one of
their hubs or I don't know what, but it's obviously the
ISP that is causing this problem. I too have some friends
who live nearby and are using COX and can connect fine,
but I think it all depends on what hubs we are connecting
through. Anyway, it seems like this problem is out of our
reach and we have to wait for COX to fix it. Keep updating
on this problem!

Hi Marvin,

Actually Microsoft has nothing to do with my solutions. My solutions are my own and anything
that I post is my own work (unless otherwise noted), and have been paid nothing for. It's
also not really *my* software, as I had nothing to do with writing it (with the exception of
some suggestions).

Don't get me wrong here, I don't want royalty payments or expect any monetary compensation.
I'm simply pointing out that when you copy/paste my own work, call it your own and don't even
quote the reference, you are in fact plagiarizing.

This is the preamble to the Messenger FAQ. I took specific care to mention
where it came from. I did not realize though that you were not working for
Microsoft though I think in another post I may have referred to you as a
'Microsoftian' :-)

Friends;

I've compiled a list of known resources and fixes for those who really want
their Messenger to work It's pretty comprehensive and covers a lot of
common issues If the answer is not in here I'd be pretty surprised
Each section is divided by dashes: --------------------------------

The first section is something I wrote on basic Messenger troubleshooting.
It's vital to perform these steps and also deals with some important router
issues. Start here and whatever you do - don't skip this step!

The second section is the Messenger Known Issues FAQ from Microsoft
It deals with all the common & not so common issues that Microsoft has
discovered with regards to Messenger. If the first section of the FAQ
doesn't fix your problem then this is the place to look.

The third section is a Microsoft White Paper on SOHO routers and Messenger.
It's a good one for those who really want to understand how things work.

The fourth, and last section, deals primarily with problems logging in to
Messenger/.NET Passport service. It's a short FAQ put together by Microsoft
and is very handy for people encountering sign in problems.

Well....I called Cox back shortly after my last post and
talked to a rep who was willing to listen to my story. He
said I was the second person to call with this complaint.

Anyway...he logged it, and told me someone would look into
it. Now, just a few hours later, I am able to login!! Not
sure we'll ever know what the problem was, but I am happy
my MSN Messsenger works again.
