I had looked for a while to solve voice issues with MSN
messenger on my machine. I have a cable connection
through a Linksys router and I was not sure if the
problem was messenger, XP, the router, or who knows. I
could connect with a friend for voice chat, but I could
only hear them (they could never hear me). The other day
I found this setting change mentioned on another forum
and it fixed voice for me. Other than I made sure I have
universal plug and play active I have made no other
changes to my system or router. Hope this helps somebody
out there.

In Windows, click Start, and then click Control Panel.

Click Network and Internet Connection, and then click
Network Connections.

Right-click the network or Internet connection that is
currently enabled, and then click Properties.

Clear the QoS Packet Scheduler check box.

Restart your computer.

Sign in to MSN Messenger and try using the audio feature
again.

Acadia -

Thanks very much for posting this note. I was having the same problem and
this fixed it for me too.

I am behind an SMC Barricade firewall (UPnP-enabled) with latest firmware.
Before attempting this workaround I could establish both outgoing & incoming
Webcam but only incoming Audio. After disabling QoS (Quality of Service)
everything works (Webcam In/Out, Audio In/Out).

Could I ask what forum you found this on and what Ethernet Adapter you have.

I have an "Intel PRO/1000 CT Network Connection" (gigabit Ethernet that's
integrated into my Intel motherboard). I wonder if the problem could be
specific to the Intel hardware... I'm running Windows XP on this machine
and have Windows Messenger 5.0 and MSN Messenger 6.1.0207 (I had the same
problem with both programs).

I do have another machine - running Windows 2000, with a 3Com 3C905 10/100
Ethernet adapter and MSN Messenger 6.1.0155. I do not have the QoS packet
scheduler running on that machine. I do not have the audio problem using
that machine.

Thanks again & thanks in advance for answering my follow up questions.

Hi Melvin,

Actually you're right, the QoS is specific the Intel NIC cards, most commonly found in OEM
PCs. They are aware of the issue, but I'm unsure how far they are in fixing it.

Why the fuck does it matter? People shouldn't have to do
shit to fix the fucking voice. MSN is retarded and always
will be... this shit should be taken care of before it

MSN 6.1 possible Voice Fix for windows XP by david

Does anyone know the equivelent fix for 98. I have tried
everything else i have seen printed anywhere. I have been
to varios support providers and followed every suggestion
provided. I still can't talk to my brother. We can talk in
netmeeting but not messenger and I do not understand the
difference.

Any help would be appreciated.

Jonathan,

How can the QoS scheduler effect MSN voice for v6.1 and
not MSN voice for v5.0?

Hi,

MSN Messenger 6.x does come with a newer version of the Real-Time Communication libraries
(which is how voice works), however, I believe the QoS issue affects all Messenger versions
(at least I haven't seen any data/experiences which proves differently).
