Ok here's my question:
My problem is that one of my friends appeared on my
contact list as
"my-friends-nick[away]", and she says that just at the
given moment she
signed on msn,
so according to her story:
the last time she signed out her status was set to away
and somehow
Messenger remembered her status and when she signed in
again her status was
"pre-set" to "away". I've tried the same thing with my
msn6 but it didnt
work: every time i signed in my status was set to "online"
no matter what
status i set in the previoous session...
the only way that i could make that work is if i BLOCK
someone as "away" and
then unblock that person then my status would still
be "away".... right?
Personally i think its a lie but i wanted to check with
the microsoft
support to see if you have encountered such a problem,
Alot of ppl are complaining at the new messenger so i
thought it might be
due to the buggy messenger.......

Anywayz thanx for ur help ;)

Not too sure myself on that, but it does seem that they're hiding
themselves in the way you described to me....wait for Jonathan to reply
though...he knows more than I do on that.

I think she has a quite normal MSN Messenger 6, was there
a bug that made that possible in previous releses or betas?

btw. would you mind explaining what are polygamy patches
exactly and what do they do???

Hi,

The two main scenarios where someone can be automatically set to away is if they're on Remote
Desktop (Messenger's detection of whether or not you're there doesn't quite work while
connected via Remote Desktop, so it will set to away within the first few minutes of being
connected) or if someone is away and their Messenger client is disconnected, Messenger will
periodically try to "reestablish" the connection and when it does, it will set the status as
away.

Other then this, there is no way to "choose" your status before you sign in nor is there a
way to choose a status before your sign out and have Messenger "remember" it. Note that this
only applies to Microsoft's Messenger clients, third-party clients (ie. Trillian) do support
this feature (so if your friend is using Trillian, she may actually be seeing this). From a
technical prospective, the protocol does allow this to happen, it's just whether the clients
utilize it (which the Microsoft clients currently do not).

And how about if she is using a beta 6 version? Is there a bug in that
verison of messenger that can mess up the display of your status so it shows
"away" instead of "online"?

Hi,

No bug with that in any of the beta versions (public or leaked) that I'm aware of.
