Hello, I have a question concerning an IM i started
recieving from messenger@microsoft.com The IM is being
sent like once every hour!

It says:
.NET Messenger Service Staff: You are running a version
of messenger that requires an immediate security update.
Please visit http://messenger.msn.com/Help/Upgrades.aspx
to complete the update.

When I go to that website, it says...
As part of Microsoft's Trustworthy Computing initiative,
Microsoft is delivering a security update for some users
that connect to the .NET Messenger Service for instant
messaging using MSN Messenger or Windows Messenger.

So if I am using a third party messaging program, signing
in with my passport ID, why do I need to download
software "for instant messaging using MSN Messenger or
Windows Messenger.", as referanced above.

I have permantely removed both MSN messenger and Windows
messenger from my system. I am running XP.

Thank you in advance.

jim

Greetings Jim,

This message is being sent to anyone logging into the .NET Messenger network whom is not
using Windows Messenger 4.7.2005 (or higher) or MSN Messenger 5 (or higher). These versions
(among other things) use a new authentication scheme to logon. Since you're not using either
of these clients, you're seeing the message.

In the coming months, all current clients which are displaying this message and using the old
authentication scheme to logon, will no longer be able to access the .NET Messenger network
(this includes your current third-party software version). Whoever made your third-party
client will need to get a license to use the .NET Messenger network, and will need to release
a new version.

Need to get a license?? Are you really "Windows MVP, Messenger"
Associate Expert or you are just some homie out there joking with me
and the rest of us here? Ok, I am providing third-party software - can
I be directed to the place where I can purchase this license of yours?
Give me a link.
By the way what happens if I continue to write my third-party software
and still get into your messenger service without your system noticing
it? What are you going to do if I come to you and tell you, "Look,
I've got 2 million users who use my software and avoid MSN's
aggravating ads and flashing things on their messenger"? Whatcha gonna
do, huh?! Sue me, put me in jail? Post the punishment I am gonna take.
I need to get prepared.
Thanks.

Ha ha ha ha ha... you're serious? From what I have read about this, if you
don't purchase the license for the .NET framework, you're third party app
and all it's 2 million users won't be able to log into the .NET messenger
network. You can write all the software you want, but without the license,
it won't be accessing the .NET framework.

Satisfied MSN user.

3rd party messaging by Dylan

>I have permantely removed both MSN messenger and Windows
>messenger from my system. I am running XP.

It's this kind of behavior that is the height of hypocrisy.
The very same thing that Microsoft attacked AOL for a few
years ago, when MSN had no users and AOL had them all...
Microsoft complained that AOL's protocol was proprietary
and that they didn't allow their network to be open to
other clients, either with a business agreement or not.

Now Microsoft is doing the same thing. Bunch of hypocrites!

Sigh. This is the last straw with me. This will make it
difficult for me to stay in reliable touch with my friends
who use non-MSN clients, particularly Unix users.

Therefore, I have removed the XP machine I have in my house
and replaced it with a G4 running Mac OSX. I'm disgusted
with Microsoft's business practices and especially
considering their recent conduct in the BURST.COM case, I
am 99% certain they will do nothing but more harm than good
for consumers and technology in the days ahead.

I would hope instead of bleaker scenarios, that Microsoft
reads these postings and tries to do what's right for the
users, current customers and future customers -- instead of
this rampant paranoia about maintaining their hegemony.
But I seriously doubt it, and I'm not going to wait around
and get married to Microsoft to find out.

I wish the rest of you luck, you'll need it.
