The link for Windows Messenger is fine. With regard to the SP4 links,
the first link is for an update program that will only download the
components and files that your PC needs. The second link is the full
Upgrade file that has everything (even stuff you don't need). Which one
you go for is up to you, can depend on your internet connection. If you
have a good speed for download, then I personally would go for the
second one.

Thanks,
do you know if is it really necessary to install sp4 to use messenger
5.1 and remote assistance?

Unfortunately I don't have a 2000 SP3 machine to hand to find out, but
looking at the supported systems on the Windows Messenger page, it does
say that it's Windows 2000 SP4.

Greetings,

Remote Assistance is a Windows XP only technology. It will -never- work on Windows 2000.

I always thought it was there with older versions of Messenger... Maybe
I've just been using XP too long ;)

Hi,

Nope. It uses a shadow session in Terminal Services to work. Windows 2000 (Pro) doesn't
even have Terminal Services...

Hi,

The best you can do is use the Application Sharing function (which is in Windows 2000 SP4 and
built-in to XP) and then the user in question has to share the Desktop.

It's a bit different and not very friendly, but you can still take control and so on.
