Well, this seems to be a common problem, but nothing
anyone has suggested works.

Here's a challenge for ya.

My MSN v6.2 starting running funny. I would launch it and
it would come up and then shut down. So, I uninstalled and
attempted a reinstall. Running Win98. When I run the
install I get error 1603 then a second pop up for error
2889.

I was able to install v4.6, but of course that version
does not seem to work anymore...It just prompts me to
upgrade which I of course can't do.

Help anyone. Thanks muchly

1. use cleanmgr of win98. go to run type cleanmgr then
check all boxes..

2. go again to run then type %windir%\winsxs then look and
rename the folder :

x86_Microsoft.Windows.Networking.Dxmrtp_6595b64144ccf1df_5.
2.2.1_x-ww_468466a5 as
x86_Microsoft.Windows.Networking.Dxmrtp_6595b64144ccf1df_5.
2.2.1_x-ww_468466a5_old

and

x86_Microsoft.Windows.Networking.RtcDll_6595b64144ccf1df_5.
2.2.1_x-ww_d6bd8b93 as
x86_Microsoft.Windows.Networking.RtcDll_6595b64144ccf1df_5.
2.2.1_x-ww_d6bd8b93.old

3. reinstall msn messenger.

I tried this before. Today, I have actually got to the
point where I have deleted winsxs folder. There is nothing
there anymore. Still won't install. Same messages. It's
gotta be something else.

this should work

1) Click Start > Run
2) Type msiexec /unreg and press enter and wait until it appears to have
finished.
3) Go back to Start > Run
4) Type msiexec /regserver and press enter.
5) Try to install MSN Messenger 6 again. Good luck
