I have tried the common fix of renaming folders
in 'winsxs' folder. I have actually got to the point of
deleting this folder and still get same errors.

jamie u may have a virus. heres how to remove it:

click Start, Run, type the following:

sfc /scannow

click ok
(don't forget the "SPACE" between sfc and /scannow)

P.S

It may ask u for the windows xp cd. so just put it in ur
cd drive if it asks

now try install msn messenger

if it still won't work go here:

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32
.nimda.a@mm.removal.tool.html

download and run the tool

now install msn messenger

this should work
1) Click Start > Run
2) Type msiexec /unreg and press enter and wait until it appears to have
finished.
3) Go back to Start > Run
4) Type msiexec /regserver and press enter.
5) Try to install MSN Messenger 6 again. Good luck
