    - gosh this is stupid... I haven't had time to play around with my messenger profile for about 3 years, but I was trying to update my profile this evening. I suppose they have changed and added a lot behind my back, but I think the interface has become real chaotic. Also, it seems that I'm still 51 years old (wish that were true). Is it really that stupid not to add one year each year??? So I tried to correct this, but this ALSO doesn't seem to work. When I try to edit my birth date I can enter a day, a month, but when I try to enter the year it says 2008. And NO other options in the dropdown list! Now not ever using Windows Messenger 4.7 A while back i went from MSN Messenger 7.5 to Windows Live Messenger 8.1 so when i look in all programs i have two - Windows Live 8.1 and Windows Messenger 4.7 programs. BUT in add/remove there is MSN Messenger 7.5 and Windows Live Messenger 8.1 with Windows Messenger 4.7 not listed at all. Does version 7.5 need to stay in add/remove being a part of Live 8.1 or can it be removed? Also with Windows Messenger 4.7 NOT being in add/remove and never being used do i need to keep it or is it removable, and how would it be removed?     - Messenger Install I have MSN messenger 7.5 with a Windows XP service Pack 2 Everytime I try to install the new version of Messenger it says "the old version of Windows Live cannot be removed". So the new version doesn't install. Also I tried to remove MSN Messenger 7.5 from Add or Remove Programs but when I try to remove MSN it says "the patch package does not exist.     - Very BZARRE Problem With Windows Live Messenger 8.5 Hello there, I recently had a really, REALLY strange thing happen to me with Windows Live Messenger 8.5. I've been spending hours upon end trying to solve it and have still not come up with anything. Here's the story: I've been using Windows Live Messenger 8.5 for probably about 3 months now with no errors whatsoever. A few days ago, I signed out and went to bed. I woke up the next day, double-clicked to open up Windows Live Messenger 8.5 and nothing happened. I checked the computer's processes, and it said that the messenger process was running, but I could not use it. Naturally, I decided to uninstall it and re-install it. After re-installing the messenger, I tried to open it up and yet again, the process started but nothing happened. At this point I figured something must have gone wrong and corrupted in the registry. So I uninstalled it again, cleared out any files (visible and hidden) that had to do with Windows Live Messneger, and then opened up my Registry Crawler. From there, I deleted any entry that was related to Windows Live Messenger. I repeated this multiple times, as well as the fact that I used CCleaner to fix any registry issues afterwards. I then restarted the computer, and proceeded to install Windows Live Messenger 8.5 again. Here's the weird part. Every time I booted up the installer, it told me that I already had it installed and I was good to go. Huh? I did a registry search and not one key was connected to Windows Live Messenger, yet the installer told me I was ready to start chatting. So I restarted again, and then ran a Disk Cleanup and Defragmented my hard drive. I then restarted again once the processes were finished, and tried to install the messenger once more. Same problem. For some reason the computer was telling the installer that everything is installed and working. I even tried to install older versions of Messenger (8.1, 7.5 and 7.0) however each installer said that I already have the latest version installed, and that if I wish to continue I should go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall it...but it isn't there...because it isn't on my computer anywhere. I truly do not understand is going on here. How is it possible that the installers think that I have Windows Live Messenger 8.5 perfectly installed when there is no trace of it at all on the computer (not in the registry nor any visible or hidden folders)? I came here to the Microsoft newsgroups, because hopefully you can help me out here, as you obviously know more about this stuff than me. Thanks for your time, spider-fan P.S.     - CAN'T LOG IN FROM HOME LAN Hi, Can log into MSN messenger via my t-mobile wireless internet connection using the cellphone network ...... but not via my ADSL link from home (uses a LAN connection from laptop to modem/router. Have switched off firewall completely. Have ensured that same "computer on the move" profile is used in both cases. Right now, am using the wireless mobile phone connection with the AVG firewall turned back on!     - Receive random message/file from contacts Hi I'm using Windows Live Messenger Version 2008. Sometimes I just get a random message from someone (actually 2 particular people) in my contact list, with a request to accept a file (.zip file ).     - I uninstalled MSN Messenger, but I keep getting messages anyways I (think) I uninstalled Messenger and all its little bits of junk about a month ago, but just recently, I suddenly started getting instant messages from my friends, though the main MSN Messenger window can't be found anywhere on my computer, and a search through all files came up with no results.     - Account won't stay logged in I recently bought a brand new Sony Vaio laptop and the first software I installed was MSN Messenger. I have two different MSN accounts. One of them I can login and use with no problems, while the other will (what appears) to disconnect and then try to connect again once the try again countdown finishes. I have tried to log into that account at another computer and no problems, connects as it should, but then if I try to connect again on my computer it does the same problem. Any ideas?     - Live Messenger Crashes I am currenlty running Vista, Office Enterprise 2007 and MSN Live Messenger 8.5 and has been crashing for over 6 months. I also have Groove installed, and now that I think of it, it seem to have started after installing Groove.     - I want to block IM, but not Hotmail I want to block select, previously approved, people from seeing me in IM; but I still want them to be able to send me email in HotMail. When I block someone in MSN IM, it seems they can no longer send me email to my hotmail account. Some customers just wont leave me alone in IM. They ping me 24x7 for every little thing. I want to block them in IM. However, I still want them to be able to send me email to the same Hotmail account. This gives them 2 minutes to figure out their own issue before they cry for help.     - Web Cam freezes with Live Messenger Can anyone advise how to deal with a cam freezing up with Live Messenger ? I have searched on google and there seems to be a lot of discussion on this topic - but no solutions that I can see. Both cams in a link are Logitech - but the freezing only affects one person not both. The freeze is worse if you do a video call - as then it just stops altogether. However if you only do cam and no sound then it does freeze - but will unfreeze after a while - and then freeze again.     - MSN messenger for Win 2000 hangs on sign in Hi! Any idea why msn messenger 7 downloaded from Microsoft website (for Win 2000) hangs after installation while attempting to sign in. I had it installed for quite a while and was working properly until a couple of weeks ago. I installed Microsoft.net/Frames 2.0 that came with camera software, not sure if that had anything to do with it. Uninstalled it, did Microsoft update , reinstalled msn messenger 7, no avail. Also weird, sometimes when I installed it then signed in, I would get a message saying I needed to upgrade, I agreed, then from what I can tell it downloaded the same version again.     - WLM Getting Frozen Intermitentenly WLM Getting Frozen Intermittently I am Experiencing problems with WLM, ever since I upgrade It to version 8.X, in my laptop I have 8.0 and on my desktop I have 8.5.1302, and in both I am experiencing the same problem which is it gets frozen. All of the sudden, does not matter if you are streaming video o no. it gets frozen does not allow me to do anything and then unfroze itself within a minute or two. It has been working fine for a long time but for the past few days, nobody on my contact list can initiate a conversation with me and all are unable to send me any messages.     - Live photo gallery Not sure where to post this but since it's downloaded with messenger thought I might ask here... I've just installed windows live photo gallery as part of the upgrade to messenger that popped up today, I've added my main pictures directy to the program. When I view the pictures via the directory listing (at the top of the left panel) everything displays correctly, in directory order. When I select the date ordered listing (again from the left panel), the pictures are displayed but some are duplicated (one was even triplicated). I've checked that my pictures directory wasn't included in the original install and I've 're-added' it (which wouldn't account for the selective duplicates though), I've removed the directory and re-added to completely and I get the same problem. The duplicate pictures are the exact same picture listed twice, there are no duplicates on my hard drive. When I view the pictures via the slideshow (clicking forward or back manually) it still show the picture twice and thus requires two clicks to advance to the next picture.     - Vista Home premium and Windows LIve messenger I have tried my best for last 1 week but MSN live messenger does not work on my vista. I mean doesnot go ONLINE. I even tried 7.5 but it asks for an upgrade. I am really stuck. I have a DSL connection, Netgear 8234 Router version 2. I get this error Error Code: 81000306.     - passport/live ID problem When Itry to create a .net passport/live ID account for a friend using his existing email account it keeps giving an error for the email address. His address after the @ is the problem. It is @orange.fr, but if I try a different ISP, say @free.fr, it moves on to the next step OK.     - Live Messenger hangs when browsing for new display picture I've got Live Messenger v8.1 (maybe it's the most recent version...I dunno, cause get.live.com doesn't actually say what the latest version is) . Recently, I tried changing my display picture (which I've done many times before with no problems), but now, as soon as I click the Browse button, Messenger hangs to the point of needing a process kill (clicking anywhere in the Messenger windows leads to a Win chime, it's completely unresponsive even to the point of not giving a menu on the Taskbar when right-clicked). Anyone experience this error, and if so, is there a way to make it go away short of going back to Windows Messenger? Messenger's the only Live app I'll install (the toolbar was so unstable, I just don't trust software from that division any more, and this issue isn't helping), but consistant app hangs are something I can't tolerate. The issue I'm having is in regards to one particular contact on my list. As of recent everytime i go to engage an IM with that contact it cause my msn to hang. When I restart msn again it works with no issues I can IM anyone either online or offline with msn except with this one contact. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling messenger live but with no results. I have a notebook with messenger 8.1 installed and I do not have this issue with this contact. I was wondering if someone can provide some assistance on this matter as it is extremely annoying not being able to IM this contact for example as this person is someone I contact on a frequent basis. i have a problem. it takes me about 5 minutes to start my MSN messager 8.1,
every time. i have uninstall the old version and restart computer etc. it
just doesn't work and finally the application appeal after like 5 mins.
however, if i start the Windows Messager, it pops up right away and works
fine. Please help. what can i do?

plus, under the Windows Task manager -> Processes, i see msnmsgr.exe is
running, Mem usage is 14,816k.

Greetings William,

What you're describing could actually be a problem with Messenger and a router on your local
network. Assuming you do have a router, you may need to either reset it (unplug it and plug
back in) and/or upgrading its firmware to the latest version from the router manufacturer.

yes. i am using Aopen router version AOR-401M. However, there are two
computers connecting with this router. My wife's computer is working MSN just
fine. And about that plug-in plug-out thing, i just did it yesterday, due to
a network disconnect. So is it possible a problem with my system? i am using
xp home edition sp2.
