Greetings Nanny,

Unfortunately there's no real way to "know" but there's two main circumstances that can cause
this to happen.

The first is you've logged in and saved your password somewhere else, in which case you'll
simply need to change your password here:
https://memberservices.passport.net/ppsecure/MSRV_ChangePW.srf

Secondly, and assuming you're using Windows XP, Windows Messenger (the built-in Messenger
client in Windows XP) may be automatically logging you on. To stop it, open Windows
Messenger (click Start, then Run, type "msmsgs" and click OK), click Tools, Options,
Preferences tab and unchecking 'Run this Program when Windows starts' or 'Run Windows
Messenger when Windows starts' (depending on version). As well, you can disable it further
by going to Start, Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs, Add/Remove Windows Components on
the left, uncheck Windows Messenger in the components list and click Next >. Note: this is
only available if you've installed Windows XP Service Pack 1 -- if you haven't, visit
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com. This won't remove Windows Messenger completely, but it
will let it stay out of your way. Do *not* just remove Windows Messenger (as others will
tell you to do), by doing so you will disable a number of features both in Windows and MSN
Messenger, including Remote Assistance, Whiteboard and Application Sharing.
Also, do you have Norton Antivirus installed? Recent versions of Norton Antivirus added a
new "instant messaging scanning" feature, which can conflict with Messenger and cause it to
also keep starting. To stop it, open Norton Antivirus (Right-click on the Norton Antivirus
icon in the System Tray/Notification Area (by the clock), choose 'Open Norton Antivirus'),
click Options, then Instant Messenger then uncheck MSN Instant Messenger and click OK.

Greetings avi,

What you're describing here has nothing to do Windows Messenger or MSN Messenger. This is
the built-in "Messenger Service" in Windows, which won't affect Windows Messenger in the
slightest.

usually you are right John, but in this case you are
incorrect. I have followed i believe your procedure as
well as other things to disable Windows Messenger and this
constantly occurs. It's been since the last or second last
patch for MSN... I also don't have any other machine
around that would log me in. I have my work laptop and my
personal machine. My laptop is turned off when i am at
home.

Hi Tom,

Still what's being described here, is not Windows Messenger or anything else that's going to
log into the .NET Messenger network. See my other reply to your other post on this issue.
