Hello,

This error means there was a general failure, which means as much as "there
was a error but what went wrong exactly is unknown".

A common cause for this error is that files that MSN Messenger needs are
missing.
You can start out with trying to see if registering the dll files required
by Messenger fixes the problem. Registering a dll file will enable Windows
to find the file for Messenger. To do so download and run this file
(http://www.msn-problems.com/downloads/register-messenger-dll-files.bat).

If MSN Messenger doesn't work after you have tried that, trey re-installing
MSN Messenger and see if it works.

hi,
i downloaded the DLL and registered it, but still i get the same error.
As you suggested reinstalling the application i did that as well, but it is
of no help. I am using a desktop firewall, i have stopped that even. As i
have told earlier i connect to internet through proxy, will that be the
problem.I am able use my yahoo messenger but why can't i use msn messenger.
