I am connected to Windows Live Messenger through a Westell versalink 327W
router to my Verizon DSL connection. My connection status in messenger
always says "You are connected to the internet through a non-UPnP IP
restricted NAT. (Administrator).". What settings can I adjust to make it a
direct connection? I found some settings in my router configuration under
WAN for Protocol: and my choices are bridge, classical IPoA, PPPoA, and
PPPoE. Also, QOS choices are CBR, UBR, VBR. (don't know if any of this info
helps). I am just trying to make the connection direct to try and improve
the audio quality while using my webcam.

Greetings,

Using the Single Static IP feature should do the trick. You can find instructions for this
in the manual here:
http://www.westell.com/content/sales/327W.pdf

on page 40 (section 12.1).

I messed around with the router setting for almost 2 hours......I am afraid I
am not very good with adjusting all the different settings...nothing I
changed got the messenger status to change, and when i set a single static ip
then i couldn't get a connection. There is just way to many settings to
adjust in the router settings, and I don't know what many of them do. There
are times when messenger does come in pretty good, so i am not sure that the
direct connection would make much of a difference. What seems more critical
to messenger coming in good is whether that message "the network appears
slow" pops up when webcaming.

Hi,

Well if it can't establish a direct connection, it uses a relay server and displays the
message you're seeing.

You might want to give Verizon a call as they may already have instructions available to help
you out with this -- I somehow doubt you're the first one to encounter the problem.
