I cannot connect mostly every time when MSN Messenger 7 starts up
Sometimes it starts up normally
If it does connect, it stays connected. Only connecting when first starting
up is the problem.
I get the following proposed changes when running troubleshooter.
What do they mean, and can I change the back if i need to? Where is the
configuration utility??

SettingProposed

Change

Domain Authority Clear
Domain Authority Configuration Version Clear

Also, I have ZoneAlarm.

Troubleshooter says these thing are keeping me from connection.

Thanks for any help.

At last, other people having the same problem.
Up untill now I thought I was the only one.
This way the problem might be fixed soon. :-)

I have 4 computers that have this problem, sometimes it takes 10 minutes,
hours, sometimes days.
Sometimes one person gets the error that her password is invalid, but it is
valid, so a few days she cannot connect.

All computers have a hardware fire-wall+router that has te problem.
2 of the has Zonealarm (latest) and 1 has IM Secure (Zonelabs).

The most annoying thing is that other people see me connected, but when they
try to contact me then some error occurs and a popup is shown. Of course I
fail to respnd to them, since I cannot respond. So technicaly I am
connected, but MSN Messenger does not know it so the user interface thinks
that it is not connected.

If I let MSN Messenger test the connection the everything checks out ok.
MSN Messenger 6.x never had this problem.

Currently one solution seem to work:
If I go to C:\Documents and Settings\olafb\Application Data\Microsoft\
Then rename folder "MSN Messenger" and start it up again, then it logs in,
but sometimes I lose some email addresses, so I have to put them in again
manually. The next day, the problem is back. So again I have to rename that
folder. Sometimes it seems to work without problem. Right now we use Skype
instead since it always works.

Olaf,

There are lots of problems and few advantages in MSN 7. I suggest you go
back to MSN 6.2 until Microsoft can fix version 7 - after all it is just out
of beta and the Microsoft machine moves very slowly

We tried.
It then keeps on asking to update to the new messenger 7.

The biggest advantage is the videoconferencing that works even when you are
behind a firewall, so that is why I keep trying it.
I need it.

Done.

But it is clearly a bug/design error because:
* If the connection fails, then other people should not see me logged on.
* Renaming that messenger folder clearly kickstarts the messenger but it
sometimes does not work.
* Messenger connection test tells me that everything is ok.
* v6.x did work perfectly, never had problems with it.
* Skype always connects! Never problems.

Something about the computers:
* All computers tested have all latest service packs, no known add-ware, no
known spy-ware, no known virusses/worms.
* All computers have all only legal software. (probably one of the few
people that does it)
* All computers have no other problems.
