My son who is at uni contacts use using MSN (7.5)Messenger, by means of a
Evesham Laptop, with built in camera/webcam. Although the camera seems to be
working o.k. the webcam will not connect via msn, as anyone any idea what the
problem may be.

Greetings,

I assume they're using the university network? If so, it's possible that their network is in
fact blocking the webcam connection. You might want to have him check to see if he can use
his webcam with other people to determine if its just a problem between you and him or with
everyone.

If the latter, you might consider trying another application that might better get around
university network blocks, like Skype (www.skype.com).

I think he is connected to the university network, so you may well be right,
as he says that he cannot view other peoples webcams on his laptop. In short
webcam is not going out or coming in. He as no problem communicating by text.

Hi,

If it's blocking both ways it's probably their network then, unless he has some third-party
firewall installed which is blocking it (ZoneAlarm, Norton Firewall, etc.).

Hi,

The Windows Firewall shouldn't block it and only blocks incoming connections (viewing other
people's webcams is an outgoing operation). So that's not the problem either.

As it could be the Uni Network, I've asked him to see if there IT people can
help solve the problem.
