We got direcway a few months ago and msn messenger was

I have had a couple people tell me that it has to do with

Port forwarding and MSN Messenger
Hi all,
I'm trying to figure out if any port forwarding needs to be done to
get MSN working properly. I have a Linksys router with Comcast cable
internet. With Messenger 6.1, everything works fine except for voice.
Do I have to forward a port to get this working? Also, if I have two
computers at home I want to use MSN messenger with, how do you forward
a port to two different computers?
Thanks for the help. Tag: blink incoming chat in the task bar Tag: 43892

status lost
In MSN Messenger 6 I noticed that when the connection (ADSL) is interrupted,
my status setting is not retained. So when I have set it to "away", and I
come back, this setting is lost and people have been trying to reach me in
vain.
I think this (bug) can be solved by resetting the status to the previous one
before the interruption.

0x80004005 MSN :-(((((
greetings!
we all, obviously, have almost the same problem, but noone is offering any
solution!
since the 10th february i can't sign in on MSN from any pc. i use the newest
version, with nothing new installed in meantime. everytime i try to sign in,
i get the error message 0x80004005. nothing new in this newsgroup, i think.
i have, however, no problems signing in over web (the same account, .net
passport and hotmail).
so, someone should give us here a constructive solution or at least,
explanation to this problem!
i don't think that Mr. Johnatan Kay has an easy job here, but his solutions
were of no help so far! so if microsoft's staff has only titels but no
knowledge, then we don't have to wonder why is microsoft software not
working properly!
best regards to all!

Messenger voice through a firewall
Problem:
I have an international remote user who wants to speak to a local user
without using a normal telephone so as to avoid paying for international
phone calls. The remote user is on WinXP and a dial-up line with a software
firewall (Norton). The local user is on WinNT4 with a DSL line and a
hardware firewall (Watchguard SOHO box).
I am not a numpty! I understand WinNT, WinXP, ports, firewalls etc etc, but
I'm not familiar with Messenger or Netmeeting. I have searched high and low
on Microsoft support and Knowledgebase and have been unable to find simple
information about what ports the different versions of Messenger and
Metmeeting use. All I can find is Microsoft's baby-talk tech support
information. No hard info. regarding port usage.
Can anyone tell me where Microsoft publish information regarding the port
usage for the various versions of MSN Messenger, Windows messenger and
Netmeeting? I don't need patronising rubblish about "click this button and
type in this number etc". I just want the port usage.
Also, I've seen a post here saying that some port usage changed from MSN
messenger 5 to 6. Does that mean some features are not backward compatible?
Thanks in advance,

MSN Messenger behind firewalls
I work for an organization that has about ten people at one location
using a Novell network and another ten people scattered at other
location, mostly universities. We frequently connect by
teleconference, but sometimes it would be nice to have some video
communication. I have looked into NetMeeting, but it seems to have
problems working through the multiple firewalls that we have. Does
anyone have any experience using MSN Messenger in a similar situation,

Linksys) firewall on the other? Thanks for any help. Tag: blink incoming chat in the task bar Tag: 43853

different kind of UPnP problem
A puzzler for the experts perhaps.
I have a home network with half a dozen XP clients (all
SP1 with critical updates). These are arranged in an
Active Directory Domain environment.
I have a Netgear VPN endpoint firewall/NAT but one that
is UPnP capable and enabled. There are Windows 2003
server-based DNS and DHCP services on the network so I
don't use the DNS/DHCP in the router.
Exacly one of the client machines on the network can
successfully make two-way voice/video conference hook ups
with systems outside the local network.
All other systems are unable: symptoms are video hookup
in both directions but no audio is received at the remote
end from my machines.
I have tried explicitly deleting entries in the "internet
connection" properties; doesn't help. I've tried
installing the UPnP components that aren't installed by
default with XP (although the working system doesn't have
those it seems). I've tried disabling the QoS scheduler
(although it's not disabled on the working client).
Since I have one machine that works perfectly, I conclude
that the issue must be with the client system setup
somehow rather than the firewall/UPnP per se. What could
I possibly have set differently on the one "golden"
system that seems to work just fine?
The one system that works was at the point of needing
retirement some time ago...I've nursed it just for this
one ability but it may fail finally anytime. I could
really use help to get one or all of the other systems
working.
Any suggestions for me, please? I'm sort of at a loss :-
( Thanks in advance.
Cheers,
Mark. Tag: blink incoming chat in the task bar Tag: 43831
Questions about alerts
I am new to MSN Messenger and have a couple of questions about alerts.
I have set up various alerts on MSN Messenger. No problems with this.
To reduce screen clutter, I close the messenger window (but remain
signed-in). The questions:
1. An alert shows up as a popup. It stays for a few seconds and then
disapears. If I was not looking at the screen when it popped up, I
would never know an alert has arrived. So, is there a way to keep the
alert on screen until I dismiss it?
2. I see that alerts keep accumulating in the Alerts tab. Are they
cleared automatically? If so, how does it work? Or do I have to do it
manually? If so, how do I do that?

Dear all,
This error message only started when I updated to version 6.1. In the middle

frustrating.
Thinking that there may be a conflict of the versions, I have looked to see

Sign-In Problem (0x80004005 Error)
This is driving me crazy. For the past week I keep getting the 0x80004005
error when I try to sign into MSN Messenger. I doesn't matter what PC I try

Microsoft side however I keep getting generic responses from MSN tech
support.
I found a forum on another site that addressed this issue. Apparently there
was a guy who worked at Microsoft who verified that this problem was on
Microsoft's side and he actually was able to fix a couple of accounts of
people who e-mailed him. Unfortunately he shut down his e-mail after
getting flooded with requests. Does anyone know if Microsoft is looking

MSN Sign out problem. Solve it now.
Ok, so you got your Johnathan etc on here, well to let you know
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_mess_disable.htm
Will COMPLETELY remove Windows Messenger and forever rid you of the problem
where Windows Messenger signs you out of MSN Messenger. Now you notice I
don't tag any MS certification and all, that's because I don't need it. I
have been trying my own solutions and so forth to get rid of Windows
Messenger and in the end it was 99% gone.. well then I re-discovered Doug
Knox and his utility which another Microsoft person said, no no don't use
it. Well there's one reason he said that. Because it REALLY DOES remove
Windows Messenger. Don't worry about profile crap he spewed on about, if he
really used the program he'd realize upon a reboot it actually asks you
directly, "do you want to remove all your Windows Messenger Profiles", you
say "Yes" and your problems are forever solved. It WILL NOT mess up your MSN
Messenger and it WILL NOT mess up your computer. All my functionality,
audio, video, file transfer it all works.
So you can trust me or forever listen to these guys who are giving you
partial solutions. Why they wont promote Doug Knox and his solution, beyond
me. I've got my suspicions(but who cares).. So it's up to you solve the
problem or keep posting and checking here for updates, go use an alternative
Messenger. Your choice.
I'm not looking for praise and I'm not looking for pats on the back or
staged thank you's. I'm just providing you the solution to fix the problem
period. I work a fulltime job and don't have luxury of time like Johnathan
but I will help who I can help when I can.
Again, your choice. No hair off my back. Doug Knox = Microsoft MVP
