Can I ask a possibly daft question on this backup utility
(http://www.baisoft.it/msnbackup_english.asp) - how do you find
your unique id or as the software describes it: puid? I've followed links to
my passport etc and checked settings and cannot find it. If someone can give
me a clue I'd be grateful.

Thanks, Tim

Greetings Tim,

You can determine your "Messenger ID" on this page:

Thanks Jonathan.

That doesn't appear to work as I get "Error 0 during CryptAcquireContext
followed by wrong Unique Passport ID. I entered the ID as appeared from your
page.

Anything else I'm doing wrong?

Cheers, Tim

Hi Tim,

Actually yes -- it's looking for another ID. Don't feel bad, even I forgot it's different.

As per the instructions on the site:
Attention: From WLM 8.1 you need to write your Passport Unique ID in MsnBackUp. You can find
it on the Passport Management at this link: https://account.live.com/SettingsPage.aspx

Note: I have done it before and it works.

Thanks Jonathan.

I did actually find the correct ID in the end but with the same result.
Loaded the same software onto another pc, and it worked fine. So this is a
mystery to me! I sent an email with the details I've described in this thread
to the software creators but haven't heard anything back so I'm going to have
to resign myself to losing it all! Oh well!

Thanks for your help.

Hi Basil and Tim,

For just backing up or moving your account to another machine, you don't even need this
utility -- you can just copy the files as of 8.1 when the encryption changed.

You only need this utility if you're trying to move content from one account/Live ID to
another (same machine or another machine).

Regardless, the UniqueID is at the bottom of the page on
https://account.live.com/EditProf.aspx?mkt=en-us&rp=Profiles.

Hi Jonathan,

I give up! Can't get hold of a version earlier than 8.1 that is allowed to
run, so can't simply copy the files across nor can I use the utility on my
old pc that is running 8.5 as it comes up with that odd error I mentioned
earlier!
