I have 3 computers running XP on a home network that
share a single dialup connection. I purchased 2 webcams
and have successfully used audio/video between any two of
them using windows messenger. Since audio is not
compatible between windows messenger and MSN messenger I
have downloaded MSN messenger as most people, I want to
converse with, have the latter. But, I cannot get the
audio to work in MSN messenger. It just gives a
message "connecting with ..." and then after some random
amount of time a message "The audio conversation with ...
has ended."

In summary, I have no problem setting up video/audio in
windows messenger but fail to get audio to work in MSN
messenger. Video is fine. Help please.

I will provide hardware or any other details if you need
them. Thanks.

Greetings Tommy,

I'm not quite sure where you heard that they were incompatible, but MSN Messenger and Windows
Messenger audio functionality *are* completely compatible (as is the video, but not the
"Webcam" -- yes there is a difference).

Both Windows Messenger and MSN Messenger make use of Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) to
connect through an "internet sharing" environment. Assuming you're simply using one of the
XP PCs and the built-in 'Internet Connection Sharing', which fully supports UPnP, there
shouldn't be any problems on your end (especially where one works but the other doesn't).

My suggestion would be that the problem is on your contacts' end, either they're using some
sort of internet sharing environment (for instance with a router) which doesn't support UPnP,
or they have a third-party software firewall setup that isn't giving Messenger the proper
permissions to access the internet connection.

For a bit of clarification -- the "Webcam" functionality (which isn't compatible with Windows
Messenger) in MSN Messenger 6.x, does not require a direct connection (like audio
conversations do) and why within MSN Messenger, the Webcam is functioning. Just for
validation purposes however, here's a few tips that you and your contact can try (although I
really doubt they'll help here):

Assuming you are using the Internet Connection Sharing, you may want to try clearing the UPnP
port forwardings. To do so, on the PC that is sharing the Internet access, click Start, All
Programs, Accessories, Communications, then Network Connections. Right-click on the
connection that you're sharing and choose Properties. Click the Advanced tab, then under the
Internet Connection Sharing heading, choose the "Settings" button. In the Advanced Settings
dialog, click each 'msmsgs' or 'msnmsgr' entry and then choose 'Delete' to each one. Then
close Messenger on all the PCs that you're going to use audio/video with (right-click the
Messenger icon, choose Exit), then restart Messenger.

If that didn't help, you might try turning off the QoS Packet Scheduler. To do so, click
Start, All Programs, Accessories, Communications, Network Connections. Right click your
network/internet connection, then click Properties. Uncheck the QoS Packet Scheduler, and try
again.

Finally, although the built-in Internet Connection Firewall should be able to allow Messenger
voice conversations through without any problem, it may be beneficial for testing purposes to
turn it off (especially on the PCs that aren't directly connected to the Internet) -- Start,
All Programs, Accessories, Communications, Network Connections. Right click your
network/internet connection, then click Properties. Click the Advanced Tab, and verify that
the Internet Connection Firewall is unchecked. As well, if your contact is using some type
of third-party firewall (ZoneAlarm, Norton Internet Security, etc.) have them make sure that
Messenger is set to "Permit All", "Allow All" or "Medium" (ZoneAlarm).

Jonathan,
Thanks for all the suggestions however still no workie
after implementing them. I finally came across something
that seems to solve my problem. It came from this link
http://messenger.msn.com/Help/Issues.aspx in the section
titled "Internet Connection Sharing using ICS/NAT." The
combination of your suggestions and this change seems to
be working. Many thanks, tom
