    - Should I upgrade from 8.1 to 8.5? When I went to 8.1 it didn't work that well and has lots of annoying little quirks and little tricks you have to use to make it work, but since I didn't use it that much it wasn't worth going back to 7.x. (For example, when I send a message to someone it will sign me out, and then I have to sign back in, switch my status to online again, and resend the message. From there it works OK until I want to send a message to a different person, and then the same thing happens...) Is 8.5 a better product or does it have *more* problems than 8.1?     - Remote assistance quit working Hi guys, Until 3 weeks ago I was able to connect to my sisters pc to help her. I have read many post and none address my problem. When she request help from me, neither of us get any error messages, her screen says that the request was sent, but on my screen the request never even displays. That is on my XP Pro pc.     - Someone signed me onto a different computer Hello, I would first like to point out that I'm very freaked out by this. I'm pretty much always signed in on MSN, but tonight, right after I was done making dinner and was just about to tell someone I had returned, I was signed off and MSN said I was logged on to a different computer. This immediately made me change my password to a ridiculously difficult one, but I want to know if there's anything else I can do. Could this be some kind of server error or did someone seriously hack my account? There are no other computers that I have ever logged on to, so there is no other computer on which I entered my login information. Only my Xbox 360 had my info, but I changed that a few weeks ago and it's turned off right now. Please, anyone, what do I do with this?     - TCP sometimes selected, making for choppy video conversation Hiya, 17Mbit/1Mbit ADSL this end, 576kbit/288kbit ADSL their end, each behind (as Messenger/Tools/Options/Connection confirms) UPnP port- restricted NAT router with a single public IP, running Live Messenger 8.5 under XP SP2. On this end I'm now using Linux+iptables for router/ firewall with linux-igd for UPnP, though it was a Speedtouch 585v6 before that, with similar behaviour. Some of the time, tcpdump confirms the two machines end up using a TCP video/audio stream for video conversations - these are peer-to-peer rather than via some relay server. These connections are fairly jerky, with sound repeating itself every so often while the picture stalls. Other times, UDP peer-to-peer is used - these conversations are smooth and pleasant. Could anyone tell me what causes one or the other to be negotiated, and whether who initiates the call should make a difference? Any way of strongly hinting the negotiation toward UDP?     - gosh this is stupid... I haven't had time to play around with my messenger profile for about 3 years, but I was trying to update my profile this evening. I suppose they have changed and added a lot behind my back, but I think the interface has become real chaotic. Also, it seems that I'm still 51 years old (wish that were true). Now not ever using Windows Messenger 4.7 A while back i went from MSN Messenger 7.5 to Windows Live Messenger 8.1 so when i look in all programs i have two - Windows Live 8.1 and Windows Messenger 4.7 programs. BUT in add/remove there is MSN Messenger 7.5 and Windows Live Messenger 8.1 with Windows Messenger 4.7 not listed at all. Does version 7.5 need to stay in add/remove being a part of Live 8.1 or can it be removed? Also with Windows Messenger 4.7 NOT being in add/remove and never being used do i need to keep it or is it removable, and how would it be removed?     - Very BZARRE Problem With Windows Live Messenger 8.5 Hello there, I recently had a really, REALLY strange thing happen to me with Windows Live Messenger 8.5. I've been spending hours upon end trying to solve it and have still not come up with anything. Here's the story: I've been using Windows Live Messenger 8.5 for probably about 3 months now with no errors whatsoever. A few days ago, I signed out and went to bed. I woke up the next day, double-clicked to open up Windows Live Messenger 8.5 and nothing happened. I checked the computer's processes, and it said that the messenger process was running, but I could not use it. Naturally, I decided to uninstall it and re-install it. After re-installing the messenger, I tried to open it up and yet again, the process started but nothing happened. At this point I figured something must have gone wrong and corrupted in the registry. So I uninstalled it again, cleared out any files (visible and hidden) that had to do with Windows Live Messneger, and then opened up my Registry Crawler. From there, I deleted any entry that was related to Windows Live Messenger. I repeated this multiple times, as well as the fact that I used CCleaner to fix any registry issues afterwards. I then restarted the computer, and proceeded to install Windows Live Messenger 8.5 again. Here's the weird part. Every time I booted up the installer, it told me that I already had it installed and I was good to go. Huh? I did a registry search and not one key was connected to Windows Live Messenger, yet the installer told me I was ready to start chatting. So I restarted again, and then ran a Disk Cleanup and Defragmented my hard drive. I then restarted again once the processes were finished, and tried to install the messenger once more. Same problem. For some reason the computer was telling the installer that everything is installed and working. I even tried to install older versions of Messenger (8.1, 7.5 and 7.0) however each installer said that I already have the latest version installed, and that if I wish to continue I should go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall it...but it isn't there...because it isn't on my computer anywhere. I truly do not understand is going on here. How is it possible that the installers think that I have Windows Live Messenger 8.5 perfectly installed when there is no trace of it at all on the computer (not in the registry nor any visible or hidden folders)? I came here to the Microsoft newsgroups, because hopefully you can help me out here, as you obviously know more about this stuff than me. Thanks for your time, spider-fan P.S.     - I uninstalled MSN Messenger, but I keep getting messages anyways I (think) I uninstalled Messenger and all its little bits of junk about a month ago, but just recently, I suddenly started getting instant messages from my friends, though the main MSN Messenger window can't be found anywhere on my computer, and a search through all files came up with no results.     - Account won't stay logged in I recently bought a brand new Sony Vaio laptop and the first software I installed was MSN Messenger. I have two different MSN accounts. One of them I can login and use with no problems, while the other will (what appears) to disconnect and then try to connect again once the try again countdown finishes.     - Live Messenger Crashes I am currenlty running Vista, Office Enterprise 2007 and MSN Live Messenger 8.5 and has been crashing for over 6 months. I also have Groove installed, and now that I think of it, it seem to have started after installing Groove.     - I want to block IM, but not Hotmail I want to block select, previously approved, people from seeing me in IM; but I still want them to be able to send me email in HotMail. When I block someone in MSN IM, it seems they can no longer send me email to my hotmail account. Some customers just wont leave me alone in IM. They ping me 24x7 for every little thing.     - Web Cam freezes with Live Messenger Can anyone advise how to deal with a cam freezing up with Live Messenger ? I have searched on google and there seems to be a lot of discussion on this topic - but no solutions that I can see. Both cams in a link are Logitech - but the freezing only affects one person not both. The freeze is worse if you do a video call - as then it just stops altogether. However if you only do cam and no sound then it does freeze - but will unfreeze after a while - and then freeze again.     - MSN messenger for Win 2000 hangs on sign in Hi! Any idea why msn messenger 7 downloaded from Microsoft website (for Win 2000) hangs after installation while attempting to sign in. I had it installed for quite a while and was working properly until a couple of weeks ago. I installed Microsoft.net/Frames 2.0 that came with camera software, not sure if that had anything to do with it. Uninstalled it, did Microsoft update , reinstalled msn messenger 7, no avail. I notice MSN Live (current version) is using 50% of my dual-core CPU.
Wow.

I notice it's using 90 megs of memory, and rising about 1 meg a
second.

Within a min its up to 128megs.... So start I this post...

As I sit here, its using 166megs of memory (its gone up 86megs in 2
min!!!!)

.....184megs after 3min
......221megs after 4 min
.........I guess my computer will be crashing soon, so I should save
this message now while I still can

There is ABSOLUTELY no justification for this cpu & memory usage.
WTF!?!?!?!?!?

If anyone could explain to me what this piece of sh*t is doing I'd
appreciate it.

.........now this is more amusing then annoying... I wonder how high
it will go?

back down....
...I tire of this game, time to close it.... not sure I'll ever open
it again....

And now...... The million dollar question: WHY THE HELL is Windows

well im no expert in this matter, by it happened to me once when i used some
new emoticons ; each time i use it the CPU usage jumps through the roof, ofc
dont know why it does that so i stopped using any new emotes
