Intel tells me via email that updating driver will solve
audio problem that occurs with Intel PRO/100 VE NIC:

Thank you for contacting Intel(R) Technical Support.
The issue you have described may be corrected by updating
to the latest driver version available for the Intel(R)
PRO/100 VE Adapter. Proceed with the setup and
installation of the drivers from the Windows* 2000, XP,
and Windows Server 2003 Network Adapter Driver Set
[PRO2KXP.EXE]. This should correct the problem you are
experiencing with Microsoft* MSN Messenger software.
If you continue to experience difficulties or have
additional questions, please do not hesitate to contact
us again.

Sincerely,

Daniel Z.
Intel(R) Technical Support

Unfortunately for me, it didn't work. Was thinking that
your original suggested fix of Intelnicfix.reg might be
affecting their fix. Could you tell me what to change
the dword to, in order to set it back to the way it was
originally? Thanks.

Greetings JW,

To remove the changes from intelnicfix, I believe you can actually just remove the key
completely, and as such, just remove the QOS key, reboot and try again. Note: this is
untested (don't have an Intel NIC here at the moment).

Thanks Jonathan; saw your reply to earlier post. Will
try removing key. By the way, the 'bad audio' has always
been garbled, once in a while a short phrase or single
word comes through. I'm beginning to feel like its not a
NIC problem at all, but something else. What, I don't
know. Will let you know of any progress.

Hi JW,

As far as I know, the Intel NIC issue should only be connecting and/or hearing both sides.
Let us know how you get on however.
