    - Cannot sign-on, 0x81000301 Hey, after reading a few posts, i realize quite a few people are having the same problem as me. Two days ago i couldn't connect to MSN Messenger 6.0, so i downloaded the upgrade to 6.1 and i still cannot connect. The message I receive everytime after several seconds of attempting to connect is: "We were unable to sign you in to .NET Messenger Service, possibly because of a problem with the service or with your Internet connection. Please make sure that you are connected to the Internet. 0x81000301" I've tried many suggests, such as delete my internet offline files, deleting cookies, clearing internet temp folders and reinstalling several times. I tried many versions, ranging from Windows original messenger (4.7), 5.0, 6.0 and 6.1 again. My internet connection works fine so i don't know what's wrong with this Messenger...     - Video on TCP, Audio on UDP, why? Perhaps somebody out there can explain this to me. It would seem that the most common problem people are having with MSN Messenger is the audio whereas the video seems robust (for the most part). From what I could determine, the video connection is via a defined TCP port value (80 or 9000) whereas the audio is a UDP stream of varying port value from 5004 upwards. Why wasn't the audio put into a separate, defined TCP port value as well? I would think most of these audio problems would go away if that were done, right? Anybody care to shed some light on this?     - Messenger status won't change Hello, I recently upgraded to 6.0 and ever since my status won't change to away if I have been inactive for 5 minutes. I tried to change the length of time and it still won't work. The only way to chage it is to manually do it. I have tried installing earlier versions (5.0) of messenger but it still acts the same.     - T1 Video Conferencing Problem Perhaps you can help me with this question. My office has a shared T1 connection with other offices. I've installed MSN Messenger 6.1 on my computer yesterday along with a Logitech Quickcam for Notebooks pro. Part of my practice involves a fair amount of video conferencing. However, when I request to video conference and the person on the other end accepts, MSN Messenger connects the two computers. The problem is that while I can see and hear the other person on the other end, that person can neither hear nor see me.     - Messenger 6.1 caused XP instability Last Sunday I downloaded and installed Messenger 6.1 on my XP-Pro (SP1a) pc and since then many programs (ACAD 2002, Adobe Illustrator 10, XP explorer) are unstable; after using them for a few minutes a random action causes the program to suddenly shut down.     - Webcam? So i've installed my webcam perfectly. but for some odd reason i cant get it to work perfectly with msn messenger 6.0 or 6.1 . Whenever i press the webcam button on msn it says it is asking for "accept or decline" from the other party, once accepted the only thing i see and my contact is a black screen. Now strangly enough the only way I can get the webcam to work is when i send for a Video Conference, even though none of my contacts have mic's or cam's.     - Corporate setup questions I've set 6.0 to log messenges to a network directory. but I'm having problems with users reading the logs. I haven't figure out how to have modify rights to the directory and not be able to see or read the logs. Anyone have a suggestion? Also they uncheck the logging option.     - MSN Messenger doesn't follow orders..... Hi, I don't know if there is someone from Microsoft reading this but maybe one of you can figure this out. These are the results of my experiments trying to solve MSN Messenger 5 connection problems. I'm connected to a corporate LAN with a HTTP proxy server with NTLM authorization, and a SOCKS4 server. I have Windows 2k and IE6 on my machine. I was only able to connect with these settings: IE6 using a proxy server and MSN using a SOCKS4 server but with the HTTP proxy settings correctly filled in (server address, port number, user and password); Changing any of the HTTP proxy values, either in IE or in MSN Messenger, and still using the SOCKS4 server option, would get me an error message. Why does MSN uses those other values if I'm clearly saying that I want to use a SOCKS server? PS: still messing around with MSN Messenger 6, but no results, yet!!     - MSN Messenger makes computer freeze up Hi, friday night it started that my mouse point was gone and my computer froze up. I found out that it had to do with the MSN Messenger. As soon MSN Messenger is started, it doesn't take 5 minutes before I have to reboot, cause it froze up.     - Problems with Web Cam Video I am running XP pro and the other party is running XP home. We both are using MSN 6.0. I have a cable modem and they are only a 56K modem. We start up a conversation and web cam is good quality but slow. Maybe a new frame every five seconds and sometimes every 10 seconds. The audio quality is good. I am in the US and the other party is in Colombia SA. The web cam disconnects about every five or ten minutes but the audio remains ok. We click on web cam and it comes back until it decides to disconnect again. It will disconnet only from one end but the end that disconnets appears to be random. When the conversation begins we start only with audio. The audio is always bad in the beginning but it improves when the web cam button is clicked? Any ideas? Would it be good to upgrade from 6.0 to 6.1 because maybe there is a bug that was fixed for the web cam problem? Jonathan previously indicated the difference between 6.0 and 6.1. But I got confused.     - Sending files kills recipient's internet connection So far I like MSN Messenger 6.1 in terms of video-conferencing (can't think why video isn't one of the icons on the main toolbar though).     - Msngr not seeing capture card cam (sort of) I have a video camera connected to PC via capture card. I can get camera footage showing in the preview window when I use the A/V Tuning Wizard but when I select Options/Web Camera Settings, it says Messenger can not detect a camera. Also, When trying to start a Video Conversation, Messenger rejects it with 'camera in use or not plugged in'. Firewall was turned off.     - Audio Problem I know this has been hashed 1000 times but here's the problem . I have a friend in Florida that I cannot recieve audio from. The video works fine. He is on a dialup and I am on DSL. I have XP Pro and he has XP home edition and is not using any firewall. He is using the new Logitech pro USB cam with mic. He is able to setup MSN Messenger 6 just fine at his end but as of yet we cannot communicate vocally. He does not have anyone else to test with. Now here is the clincher.     - which is better? 4.7 or 6.1? hello. i'm using windows xp home edition (oem) and would like to know which verision of msn is better and more reliable for instant message and chat? msn messenger 6.1 or windows messenger 4.7.2009? apart from the normal way of sendign files msn 6.1 has a feature for 'file transfer' in 'launch site'. does windows messenger have such a thing? please advice which is better as i have ehard they are made my seperate team of engineers. If not, is it ok to just go and dl the whole thing and if so a link
appreciated.

I want to be able to select my "other" webcam's on system and believe new
version allows that?

Nope, you probably won't get a notice to update. You can get the latest version
here: http://messenger.msn.com

Greetings pjp,

This is perfectly normal, you won't see the update notification for 6.1 for awhile. Yes, the
new version does allow this (the option is under the Tools menu, Web Camera Settings. Yes,
even if the 'update' was appearing, all it does is download the whole thing, which you can
find 6.1 here:
