Hi guys, Until 3 weeks ago I was able to connect to my sisters pc to help
her. I have read many post and none address my problem. When she request help
from me, neither of us get any error messages, her screen says that the
request was sent, but on my screen the request never even displays. That is
on my XP Pro pc. How ever, on my Vista Home Premium when a request is sent to
me I do get it but nothing at all happens.

Both you and your sister should:

1) Click Control Panel / Windows Firewall / Change Settings /
Exceptions
2) Pick your exceptions: Remote Access, Remote Desktop, etc.
4) Right click on "My Computer" (or whatever its called on yours), hit
the REMOTE tab. Turn stuff on.
5) If you use routers: you both must enable port forwarding for port
3389. Google this for more info.

Dennis, thanks for the reply but I have a question. If I have been connecting
up until a few weeks ago why should I have to check or change any of these
setting?

Because clearly something has changed :)

You mentioned using XP and Vista. They may be setup differently
(firewall settings inparticular)

Dennis I have checked all settings on both pc's. They are set the same. I
remember someone said they had to use safemode. So, trying many different
configurations I find that in safemode on the xp machine and with its
firewall turned off I can help the vista pc. However, no matter how I set up
the 2 pc's I can not help the xp from vista. I can accept the invite but it
never connects nor does it give any error message.

Booting into safe mode should not be necessary.... but it's a very
interesting clue... now I'm really curious as to whats going on, pls
let us know if you've solved it!

If you haven't, then please confirm/answer these 8 questions:

1) XP(safe mode) assisting Vista - works

2) XP(normal mode) assisting Vista - does not work

3) Vista(normal mode) assisting XP - does not work

4) You are using remote assistance - not remote desktop.

5) You ONLY use Windows Firewall. You do not have another firewall
installed like
Zonealarm, Sygate, Norton, etc etc. What antivirus software do you
use?

6) You have checked and rechecked your Windows Firewall settings
(check again!). Under exceptions you have clicked Remote Assistance
and Remote Desktop on.

7) You have right clicked on "My Computer" , hit properties, then
clicked the "Remote" tab, and made sure "Remote Assistance" and
"Remote Desktop" are turned on

8) Question: How do you send the remote assist request? There are
several ways: Messenger, Email, or the Help tab?

Confirm those again and we'll go from there ok? Anyone else have
suggestions?

I just found this on Microsoft's website:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555179

It sounds alot like your problem. It is very long-winded but the
gist of it is:

The Windows XP SP2 Firewall Exception Remote Assistance does not
include all of the settings required so that the Windows Firewall will
allow the incoming Remote Assistance offers to be received.

There is info there about how to fix the firewall. But as a quick test
just try completely disabling your Windows Firewall on the XP machine
while you re-test remote assistance (remember to turn the firewall
back on when your done). If R.A. works with your Windows Firewall
disabled, then we know 99% you have the problem that Microsoft is
describing in the above link.

Dennis, it will take me some time to verify everything but let me say this.
All setting are the same. The XP PC can help the Vista PC but only while in
safemode and with the firewall on or off. On the XP PC if I go to help and
support to send a request it tells me that Windows Messenger is not
installed. It is, I have 5.1. I read the info you sent and it tells me to
open port 135, why, when RA uses 3389? But my bigest problem is between me
and my sister in Florida. We both are on XP PC's and I can not recieve a
request from her unless my PC is in safemode. Also it takes forever for it to
connect if it connects at all. Sometimes we have to request a number of times
before it connects. I am on Roadrunner Turbo and she is on Comcast, I think,
with a business speed connection. Any way I know this is a lot to swallow,
maybe it would be easier if we chat on messenger when you have time.

=2E...This is a quote from Microsoft (GOD), I didn't write it:

"The Windows XP SP2 Firewall Exception Remote Assistance does not
include all of the settings required so that the Windows Firewall will
allow the incoming Remote Assistance offers to be received."

=2E...Here's another misc quote I found on the net, this one is not from
Microsoft but I believe it is correct:

"To receive Offers of Remote Assistance, the target
(novice's) computer must accept incoming connections to
sessmgr.exe, helpsvc.exe and on TCP port 135. By
default, the Windows XP SP2 Windows Firewall feature
blocks incoming connections to sessmgr.exe, helpsvc.exe
and TCP port 135. "

So.....

=2E...you are correct that REMOTE DESKTOP only uses port #3389. But
REMOTE ASSISTANCE also requires port #135 to accept incoming help
requests.

=2E...as for the two computers being set-up the same, they might appear
to be the same but Vista and XP operate quite differently. Even two XP
machines can have different updates and service packs applied, and
therefore operate differently.

=2E....I suggest: you do what the Microsoft link says to do -OR- if you
just want to quickly test if your having this specific problem, try
disabling windows firewall for about 2 minutes and test if you can use
Remote Assistance properly with it off.

Damn it, I have added port 135 to my firewall on my Vista PC and also allowed
it in my router but when I go to www.grc.com and use their shieldsup feature
it still shows that port as being stealth.
