Hi Jonathan, When i purchased my computer it had Windows Messenger 4.7 and
getting Verizon with MSN premium got a second Messenger. Now not ever using
Windows Messenger 4.7 A while back i went from MSN Messenger 7.5 to
Windows Live Messenger 8.1 so when i look in all programs i have two -
Windows Live 8.1 and Windows Messenger 4.7 programs. BUT in add/remove
there is MSN Messenger 7.5 and Windows Live Messenger 8.1 with Windows
Messenger 4.7 not listed at all.

Does version 7.5 need to stay in add/remove being a part of Live 8.1 or
can it
be removed?
Also with Windows Messenger 4.7 NOT being in add/remove and never being used
do i need to keep it or is it removable, and how would it be removed?
So if it's possible i would like to only end up with WLM 8.1. Thanks, Ron

Greetings Ron,

Actually MSN Messenger 7.5 should've been removed with the installation of Windows Live
Messenger. However, you're not the first to indicate that it hasn't. It's harmless being
listed there. If it bothersome, you can remove the MSN Messenger entry by using
freeware-application Safarp:
http://wistinga.online.fr/safarp/#downloads

All you have to do is install (just download the zip and run), search for the MSN Messenger
entry, right-click and 'Remove this entry' and you're done.

As for removing Windows Messenger, it is actually considered part of Windows and therefore
not listed in Add/Remove. However, you can remove it if you'd like. Please note that by
doing so, you will stop Remote Assistance, Whiteboard and Application Sharing from working
within Windows Live Messenger (as it depends on the old Windows Messenger to be installed for
these features to work). Assuming that's not a problem, to remove Windows Messenger, click
the Start button, then click Run and enter:
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove
Then click OK.

Also, there is a Windows Live Messenger 8.5 now, which is a recommended upgrade for 8.1:

Jonathan, That's what i thought about WM 4.7 and you provided a
very understandable answer about the others. So to clarify 7.5 can
be removed without any harm to 8.1. Thank you very much, Ron

Hi Ron,

Well 7.5 is gone if you have 8.1 as it shares the same folder -- as such, it's just the
registry entry which lists it in the Add/Remove dialog that's still there (hence my
application recommendation to remove said entry).
