Hi George,
It sounds like something might be up with the drivers you're using for your audio device.
What you may want to do is check WindowsUpdate to see if there are some others:
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
or go to the sound card manufacturer or OEM (like Dell, etc.) site to see if there are any
updated drivers.
