When I upgraded to 6.0, I had to install an audio patch
for my Win98 operating system to fix the problem with the
RTCDLL.dll file. I was then able to hold voice
conversations with only some of my friends.

After I was told that this problem was fixed in version
6.1, reluctantly, I upgraded.

Now, I am unable to hold audio conversations at all (with
friends using operating systems ranging from Win98, Win2K
to WinXP). I keep getting a message saying that an audio
conversation cannot be connected at this time, or
something similar.

I am at loss what to do. Should I try installing the Win98
audio patch that worked with version 6.0? Is there
anything else I can try?

I feel like giving up the whole idea and uninstalling MSN
Messenger. Microsoft took something that worked (i.e.
version 5.0) and "improved" it into something that doesn't
work at all...

I would appreciate any advice on how to fix this problem.

Thanks,

Danny

If you are running Win98, replacing the RTSDLL.dll file in
the windows/system directory with the version 5 RTCDLL.dll
file, fixes the audio problem with version 6.1 (as it did
for version 6.0).

Jonathan, I am happy to e-mail you the file (and the
patch) so that you can post it somewhere accessible to
everyone.

John,

Below is the URL for the "Audio Patch MSN6 Windows 98".

They modified it a bit since I downloaded first and added
a choice of two languages- French or Spanish (at least I
can understand a bit of French).

First, save a copy of the original RTSDLL.dll for future
refference in another directory. You should close MSN
Messenger prior to installin the patch. When it asks you
if you want to change the RTCDLL.dll file with an older
version, click 'yes'.

For instructions on how to use the patch go to:
http://www.technicland.com/article.php3?sid=170

To download the patch go to:
http://www.technicland.com/msnjeux/Patch-Audio-MSN6-
Win98.exe

I can't guarantee that this will work for all you
contacts. It worked only with some of my friends after I
installed it.

Hope this helps,

Danny

I have the same problem. My family in Canada has Win98 and MSNM 6.1.
I live in Europe with WinXP MSNM 6.1.

We cannot get audio to work. Strange thing is we CAN get the Send
Webcam to work.

What is the audio patch you are talking about?
Any other ideas anyone about why no audio? (Their microphone does
work and it is pluggd in properly, as is mine).

Re: Messenger 6.1 audio not working with Win98. Would appreciate help. by Bob

My brother in UK is on XP home same as me. He is dialup and I am cable with
Linksys upnp router. With all versions of MSN Messenger, video is good both
ways, but audio only one way, from me to him. By accident we found that with
him on MSN 6.1 and me on Windows Messenger we get good connections both
ways. Figure that one out!
We have previously tried every suggested fix for MSN Messenger without
success. Maybe our way out will work for someone else.

Fixed the audio problem by using the old RTCDLL.dll by anonymous

John,

The vesion I am using is 4.0.3599.0. It is a French
version, so the audio tuning wizzard is in French...

It works only with part of my friends. Is there any way to
attach files to these messages? I can send you the file or
the patch if you give me an address.

I hope this will at least help a bit.

Re: Messenger 6.1 audio not working with Win98. by Danny

Try using the Windows Messenger rather than MSN Messenger
with your family. If that doesn't work, get your family to
run the audio patch (it simply replaces the RTCDLL.dll
file supplied with the new verson of MSN Messenger with an
older version of this file - see instructions above) and
then try using Windows messenger with them. I am using Win
98, and this is the only way I could use audio with some
of my friends using XP.

I can't guarantee that this will work. It worked with some
of my contacts, but not with all of them.

Re: Messenger 6.1 audio not working with Win98. by Bob

We have had this problem with all versions of MSN Messenger and so all the
versions of RTCDLL.dll. We never had it, and still do not with Win Mess/Net
Meeting. Accordingly, now we use the combo MSN Mess one side and Win Mess
the other which works fine.
Sometimes I think there must be interaction with other programs when I see
so many with problems and others with none.
