 - Messenger Error "1603" when trying to install on Win98 Compy I'm trying to install Messenger 6.1 (even tried 5.0) and all I am getting is an error in the top of the screen consisting of numbers and decimals and it exiting out of the installation process. When I exit out of the installation it is telling me to go to MSN and download the software stating "Error Code: 1603" I searched all over and can't figure anything out! Thanks for the help!  - Repeated question, but no fix? I've been reading several posts that talk about my problem, but no actual fix. When away from your computer, the "Away" indicator does not turn on after the set time limit in either MSN or Windows Messenger. Is there, or isn't there, a fix, patch, anything for this problem? I read one post that said to just do it manually. Sure, that's fine, but it's an actual feature that Microsoft put in Messenger. Hey, it's just me, but I think that it should work since it's there.  - MSN Messenger Pooched MSN Messenger ... Until recently, I have had no problems but now, for some reason, every time I try to sign in, I get the following error message - 'We were unable to sign you in to .NET Mesenger Service, possibly because of a problem with the service or with your Internet connection. Please make sure that you are connected to the Internet. 0x81000301'. I am connected to the Internet ... I can browse the Web and I can send/receive email via Outlook Express. I tried to re-install MSN Messenger but it did not fix the problem. Methinks the key to solving this problem is the hex number at the end of the error message. Any help would be appreciated.  - Unable to un-install older Messenger version I have Windows Messenger 4.1 installed on my computer, together with MSN Messenger 6.1. Both Messengers are signing me into the Messenger from the same XP user account. I am not able to see the Windows Messenger in the Control Panel -> Add / Remove Programs list ... I also tried to just delete the C:\Program Files\Messenger folder, without much luck ... Anyway I can just have MSN Messenger 6.1 on my computer?  - OE Identities frozen by IM I have 3 identities in Outlook Express. Only one of them has a Hotmail address. No matter which I start, if I switch the running IM prevents me from switching. Trying to exit gives me BS about how something is using it. So I must [i]ctrl alt delete[/i] to end msmger. Please tell me there is a solution. The crazy part is I don't use MSIM. I am forced to have it because I chose to use hotmail in OE. If it didn't crash, I wouldn't mind it being available. But right now, I want it gone so I can get rid of my problem. I am running WinXp.  - cannot sign in As soon as any of us log in, we get 'booted' right away. example: I type my email, then password, it doesn't even load my friends list 'just says: signing in' then it goes right back to the sign in option.  - Privacy vs popups Is there any way to prevent OTHERS from getting a popup when I sign in to MSN Messenger? I don't want to avoid signing in, but let's just say that some of my contacts are not as busy as I am, and when they see the prompt that I've signed in, they take that as an invitation to start a conversation. I'd like to be available for them to reach me, if they decide on their own that they have a reason to contact me. But I'd prefer it if my signing on does not inspire them to kill some time at that exact moment. So, any way to keep my signing on from initiating a popup on other people's machines?  - Service Unavailable - Signing into Messenger - DEFINITE Microsoft Problem I am getting the "service unavailable" problem when signing into Messenger. However, I just definitely figured out this is a problem with Microsoft/Windows Messenger. Want to know why? I was getting the same exact error... service is temporarily unavailable. That is total BS. The account I was trying to use was an old .NET account ive had for at least three years. Worked fine up until a few months ago when I last tried it. Whenever I try to sign in with it using MSN Messenger 6.1 or Windows Messenger 4.7... it says service temporarily unavailable. I DEFINITELY know my password and logon credentials for this account work because I can sign in to other .NET websites with this account with no problem. Now here is the kicker.... I just created a BRAND NEW .NET account and tried to use the above two programs with 4.7 and 6.1. Guess what.. it signs in no problem.... on the same exact hardware the older .NET account uses. Now... WHY is this happening to my one account? I am cross-posting this to other threads as this is vital information to know. But I need to get an answer on why this isnt working cause I need to link my original .NET account to my MCP site.... and I need it working with some form of Messenger.  - SIP Timout Error... My setup: New Router (NetGear RP614v2) XP Pro - Panda Anti-Virus - cable modem. Case #1 - I can do Remote Assistance without any problems...it takes almost a minute to handshake, but it works just fine after that. User has cable modem also, XP Home. Case #2 - Get SIP timeout error with Application sharing OR with Remote Assitance, they have done this with others before. Is there a way to change settings to accomodate this problem?  - Audio Problems with MSN Messenget 6.1.0207 OK this one will require a real expert.....I cannot get my audio to work between 2 computers 1) I am using windows XP pro the other computer is using Windows Home edition both are on a high speed cable with Comcast. which uses a terayon tj615 modem. 2) I am also using a Linksys router BEFW11S4 VER 3.2 with the following: Firmware has been upgraded UPnP enabled 3) On my Windows Messenger tools options communication Tab it says "you are connect to the internet through a UPnP IP restricted NAT. The internet connection firewall is enabled ( Administrator) 4) I have tried the audio wizard multiple times. 5) I have also unchecked the QoS packet schedule and rebooted. 6) I removed the Linksys router and connected directly to the network card in the computer and still cannot get sound. 7) The strange part is that one time my voice was being heard on the other end. When we logged off and on again it could not be heard with no changes being made. 8) One other thing I tried was removing the UPnP from windows and reinstalling it. This is driving me crazy!  - How long is this going to go on for?!?!?!?!?!?!!? I have had a hotmail account/messenger account for approx 3 years now and it has been fine up until November of last year. Since then, I have managed to sign in for a maximum of 3 days in a row without problem. The cycle of problems goes like this: Unable to sign in due to password being incorrect (it ISN'T!) Account locked out because of too many Password attempts. Password gets reset. I can log in (this part is usually VERY short lived). I try to edit my profile and it says that I don't have one. My profile DOES exist, but I can't access it to change it. Cycle repeats. I have reported this numerous times using various methods (this board being the most productive) and to be honest, I'm more than a little pissed off with the whole affair! WHY does this keep happening to me? Is there a problem with this account being corrupted? Is it being hacked? Are other people experiencing similar problems? JS.  - doesn't recognise passport My passport is definitely active, I can still sign in to hotmail. However, my MSN messenger and my windows messenger don't sign me in saying that my account doesn't exist or that the password is incorrect. Its become a big pain - I used windows messenger previously, and it worked until I updated to v.5. I downloaded MSN and my passport doesn't work on that either. I'm not behind a firewall and i'm not using a proxy server. Also, possibly unrelated, I can't sign into hotmail using IE - I've started using another browser.  - MSN 9 upgrade works but MSN messenger 6.1 doesn't work I installed the MSN 9 upgrade and love some of the features. I installed from the CD and it automatically upgraded MSN Messenger to 6.1.  - Downloading files Can anybody help me, everytime i go to down load a file ie windows media player 9, i keep getting a page comeing up saying you donot have permission to see or download this information. I have had no problems downloading untill i changed my os from win98 to winme,i bought a new harddrive and installed everything ok as it was on 98,also ive u could give me advice on installing winxp i tried to install it straight from win98 but when it had finished and rebooted for the last time to configure the files i had a menu appear with please choose a os system either win98 or winxp.  - Opinion: Messenger audio&video problems Hi, One quick browse through the relevant newsgroups and it is clear immediately that many users have lots of problems with audio and video in MSN Messenger. And I emphasize lots of problems. Problems that some say are not present on other Messengers, such as the Yahoo! Messenger. When will we have a similar experience on MSN Messenger v6.1 and Windows Messenger v5.0. When will we be able to simply press the Talk or Camera buttons and not be faced with network problems? The problems are usually related to firewalls and nat devices and happen because MSN v6.1 / Windows v5.0 Messenger: 1. Use a random UDP port for video and audio, not a fixed one. This means that firewalls need to be UPNP (Universal Plug and Play) compatible for the port to be opened, something that only the XP firewall is. Also, users need to be logged on as administrators. Why don't you fix this? Why don't you choose a fixed UDP port so that it can be opened once and for all on each firewall? UPNP is advantagious but untill all firewalls implement it (in the next 10 years perhaps), we users will be suffering! A. Choose a fixed UDP port for audio and video. Why not? B. Make the UPNP compatible XP firewall open ports even if the user is a non-administrator. Why do I need to log on as an administrator just for audio and video, or just for a little file transfer or just for another MSN / Windows Messenger so called "advanced" feature? Why? I can do all my work without administrative privileges. I need the XP firewall, as everybody does. Or, why should I be forced to turn it off to have a single audio or video conversation? 2. MSN Messenger v6.1 and Windows Messenger v5.0, need the ip of the other party for audio and video connections, as well as other "advanced" features. But why: A. Couldn't we have non-direct connections. Couldn't the connection pass through a relay server, such as the .NET Messenger service for simple things such as file transfers, instead of being direct pc to pc. Couldn't MSN / Windows Messenger get the ip of the inviting party from the .NET Messenger Service directly. Why should the inviting party or the receiving party itself have to report their ip? This leads to problems if there is a nat or an Internet Connection Sharing device in between, since one or both of the parties might not know their true Internet ip, but will know the nat translated ip on their respective internal networks. But couldn't MSN / Windows Messenger simply get the "true" Internet ip of each party from the .NET Messenger server itself. After all, doesn't the .NET Messenger Service's server know the "true" ip anyway for instant messaging to work? Why all this fuss about requiring UPNP routers. I know and I agree that UPNP has a lot of potential and that it is an excellent protocol. But forcing it on users in this way is wrong. Instead, make Messenger UPNP aware but also provide an aulternative, (legasy if you will) way of managing connections. Isn't that what Yahoo! Messenger does? Why not MSN Messenger? Thanks, N. P. I may be mistaken, but I beleive that this combination will work if I
use the "Video Conference" option. So far, I haven't been able to
make it work.

When I run the Audio/Video tuning wizard, I see the option "ATI TV
Wonder Capture-Composite", however if I select it, my whole computer
reboots. I am using Windows XP pro.

Can anybody offer advice?

I've seen this issue before, I'm not sure if its been resolved in any newer version of the TV
Wonder drivers, you may want to make sure you the latest from ATI here:
