my o/s is xp pro. i dont have msn messenger, i have
windows messenger. i didnt want both, and windows is ok.
i go to an msn groups website forum that requires sign in
to read any pages. the problem is that i chose to sign in
automatically, and cant seem to find a way to reverse it.
i used to have to sign in with the xp drop down menu
before i read the site, and now i can get right in, but
it also allowed windows messenger to be able to be signed
in without password right out of the programs menu. other
people use my pc, and i dont want them to be able to do
that. i looked at tools/options/privacy and the tab is
checked properly. any ideas?
and also, with windows messenger, can you delete email
adresses out of the drop down somehow? thanks in advance.

Greetings Terry,

To address your first issue, you'll just need to disable Windows Messenger. To disable
Windows Messenger, open it up (click Start, then Run, type "msmsgs" and click OK), click
Tools, Options, Preferences tab and uncheck 'Run this Program when Windows starts' or 'Run
Windows Messenger when Windows starts' (depending on version) as well as 'Allow this program
to run in the background' or 'Allow Windows Messenger to run in the background' (depending on
version). This won't remove Windows Messenger, so features like Remote Assistance, Whiteboard
and Application Sharing will continue to work, but it will let it stay out of your way.

Also, do you have Norton Antivirus installed? Recent versions of Norton Antivirus added a
new "instant messaging scanning" feature, which can conflict with Messenger and cause it to
also keep starting. To stop it, open Norton Antivirus (Right-click on the Norton Antivirus
icon in the System Tray/Notification Area (by the clock), choose 'Open Norton Antivirus'),
click Options, then Instant Messenger then uncheck MSN Instant Messenger and click OK.

To address your other issue, click the Start Button, then click the Control Panel. Then,
click User Accounts in the Control Panel. Select your account name, and then on the left side
of the screen, under Related Tasks, click 'Manage my Network Passwords'. In the window that
opens, you can remove an account (in the sign in list) by clicking the passport you wish to
delete [denoted by (Passport)], and then click the 'Remove' button. To remove the automatic
login, simply remove the Passport.Net\* (Passport) entry here.

thanks for the response Jonathan... your info helped me
out.
my first question was misunderstood by you.. i may not
have said exactly what i meant, but by checkin the sign
in auto box to make it easy to access the msn groups
webpage without signing in everytime, also caused window
messeneger to open *without requirement of a password*...
(whichever passport was last signed in)..
im glad i asked about the drop down menu, because that is
how i solved my problem, managing passwords within user
account. i deleted all accounts and now works well....
thanks.

Hi,

In Windows XP, Passport is integrated into the operating system. As such, once you "save"
your password anywhere where Passport is used, then Messenger and any other Passport sites
will immediately start using it.

Assuming you've removed that Passport.Net\* (Passport) entry I mentioned below, you shouldn't
have any more issues however.
