    - It freezes on me Ok here's the problem. Everything was going smooth with my messenger. I was talking to my friend and he said to update my messenger to version 6.2. So I did and when I got back on and went to click on a contact so i could speak to them it froze. I rebooted a lot and it kept doing the same thing. So I uninstalled and reinstalled and still kept freezing. it only freezes when i click on a contact or someone sends a message to me. It's driving me nuts. the same things been going on with my yahoo messenger for a long time. So i stopped using it and went to msn messenger but for someone reason its doing the same thing. When it freezes I do ctrl+alt+delete and it wont close them down, it gives me the end now option and when i click it on it they still stay up saying not responding. Also when I try to shutdown the computer it freezes right before it's about to turn off, I have to either hit the reset button or pull out the power plug. I have a gateway with windows xp.     - This may help some folks here...... SYMPTOMS When you try to transfer a file to another Windows Messenger user, you may not be able to transfer the file. You may receive the following error message: We could not send this file because the connection is blocked. Please contact your network administrator or Internet service provider; they may be able to enable file transfers. The user who you are trying to transfer the file to may receive the following error message: You have failed to receive the file file_name from sending_user This problem may occur with all of the following Windows Messenger providers: The Microsoft Network (MSN) provider The Exchange provider The Session Initiation Protocol provider CAUSE The Windows Messenger client uses a "gethostbyname" Winsock call to determine the IP address. The Windows Messenger client sends that IP address to the remote client, so that the remote client can connect to that address and retrieve the file. This issue may occur if you are using a virtual private network (VPN) connection. The "gethostbyname" Winsock call may return the local area network (LAN) connection IP address instead of the VPN connection IP address. The remote client tries to connect to that LAN IP address. If the LAN IP address is not available from the remote client's network, the remote client cannot connect. WORKAROUND To work around this issue, change the binding order of the connections by moving up the remote access connections so that they are above the LAN connections. To do this, follow these steps: In Control Panel, double-click Network Connections. On the Advanced menu, click Advanced Settings.     - Messenger 6.2 with sound on fr114p I have come to the conclusion that Netgear and MS have different interpretations of the UPnP standard as my upnp based voice conversations with earlier MSN Messenger versions worked perfect and now fail after upgrading to MSN Messenger 6.2. After starting a voice conversation the connection is always established correctly but I can not be heard by my buddy, although upnp opens the ports (as I can see in igd table). It´s now a one-way-audio-conversation. I am working with Windows XP prof. sp1 and directx 9.1, I use latest firmware 1509. I tested in different scenarios and also tried with QoS disabled. I went back to latest MSN 6.1 version, and the things worked again perfectly. The problem: microsoft want´s to have my messenger upgraded to latest version 6.2. Who also has this voice-problems with MSN 6.2 and netgear routers? Any solutions? Btw .. there is still those bug in msn 6.1, that msnmsgr.exe remains in memory (taskmanager shows it) after you close (teminate) msn 6.2 completely. This bug only arises always after having an audio and/or video conversation with a contact which uses Windows Messenger. It does not arise after doing the same from msn messenger to msn messenger.     - UPnP question from JK website Hello, I'm having trouble getting my router, which has UPnP enabled (checked) recognized in the Advanced Connection information window in MSN 6.2 It says I'm using "non-UPnP" and I figure it is supposed to say UPnP So I've been trying to get information and this comes from Jonathon Kay: Setting up Video and Voice over a router/non-XP firewall or NAT Solve ID: 17 Summary: If you are using a hardware router or non-xp internet sharing service you will not be able to use Video and Voice in Messenger. Messenger uses a technology called Universal Plug and Play (UPnP). Currently the only internet sharing (NAT) software that is UPnP compatible is the built in Internet Sharing included with Windows XP. Hardware and software vendors are building UPnP support into their products and should be available soon. For firewalls, the built-in Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall opens the ports for video/voice automatically, but other firewalls do allow video/voice to pass -- by opening ports 5004-65535. SH: My question is --- How old is this information? I have a friend who is using an Earthlink DSL router and Win98se. He used MSN Messenger 6.2 to connect to his son in Florida and they sent video both ways. The audio wasn't tested as his son had no microphone and the other mic, my friend's, had the volume set at zero, which has since been fixed. This setup worked with Win98se and his son has win xp. I have win xp pro installed. I tried to connect with my friend and I could send and he could recieve video, but there was no audio. It seemed like a negotiation was attempted, but then canceled. Internet connection method (my login and password are in the router which enables 3 machines): I checked in Network Connections and could not find "internet gateway". Maybe I didn't choose the correct Internet connection setup method? This is the one I choose which appears to have no "gateway" options: "This network configuration typically has an external DSL or cable modem connected to an Ethernet network hub. The other computers on your network are also connected to the network hub. Each computer on the network has a direct connection to the Internet by means of the network hub and DSL or cable modem as shown in this illustration. For more information about using this network configuration, see Individual Internet connections in Network configurations overview" So far I've reinstalled (repaired) the OS, upgraded the router firmware 4/04, uninstalled MSN Messenger, deleted all MSN registry entries, and then reinstalled MSN Messenger. My conclusion is that either the router software, which clearly documents the default installation as UPnP disabled, also states how to enable it, or the MSN Messenger software is faulty. Because I am seeing a video connection being made with MSN M 6.2 using win98se and a different router. The observed behavior doesn't seem to agree with the information from JK's website (maybe the info is incomplete) which is why I'm wondering about how current "solve id: 17" is now. Greetings,

MSN Messenger is not a "substitute" for Windows Messenger (for vice-versa), they are separate
applications.

MSN Messenger and Windows Messenger has some basic functionality that is the same but have
their own unique features too.

As long as Windows Messenger isn't loaded, Outlook and Word 2003 will make use of MSN
Messenger.
